Default Tires Plus.. What a Joke

Hey guys,

To make a long story short. I bought brand new Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. I went to a well respected shop in the twin cities area to have the new tires put on my old wheels and balanced.

So I throw the wheels with the new tires on my car.. and I notice that my rear driver side wheel is wobbling in and out. I didn't want to drive the car far, so I took it to a Tires Plus near my house (very stupid idea). I didn't want to bring it there, but I figured that they could tell me if there was something wrong with the wheel.

I brought in my Z.. and they told me that my wheel was bent. They said that it had a real bad bend in it, and that is why it is wobbling. So I go back to the place that mounted and balanced my new tires, and they say that the wheel is completely fine and not bent (they took me back in their shop and showed me).

Still not sure why the wheel is wobbling.. it has to be something wrong with the car. My main question is.. why did Tires Plus lie though their teeth? Did they just not want to work on my car? Weird stuff....

It's getting harder and harder to find competent service nowadays.

The two main reasons I can think of for a wobbly tire are: bent wheel and wheel improperly mounted. If your wheel is bent, you'd probably have noticed when you bent it. So my guess is that they put the wheel on wrong.

Who put the wheels on the car? The party that did should be to blame.

It was a very reputable shop. The wheels were mounted and balanced fine. I think it is an issue with my alignment or something.. still not sure.

I don't think you should be worried about the shop lying to you when one of your wheels is wobbly. You basically have one shop telling you why a wheel is wobbly and another telling you there is no wobble. The shop that installed the wheel should've told you why you have a wobble. What was your agenda in returning to them? "Hey I think this other shop is lying to me, are they?" - why waste the energy in that?

either your rim is bent (which certain cases, it is not visible to the eye), or the lug nuts were loose on the wheel.

exactly.

If you drove in with no wheel wobble and left with wheel wobble?

Who's to blame is obvious.

Have you checked to see they didn't mount the rear wheel on the front?

The wider wheels should be only in the rear or loose lugs.

installer problem, they set these apes loose with 250+ foot.lb air impacts and the guys go balls to the wall on the first one and if the others don't line up, hey, the 250+ will fix it...WRONG!
I always take my rims off at home and put in PU then install myself with manual ratchet and torque wrench

Case in point. My guy, ten year mechanic. Genius on the wrenches and fluid car guy. Done free stuff for me cuz "that's a how a sports car should run" guy". Got my Pilot Sports on a few weeks ago. Fine. Getting gas ready to head to Miami, 2 hours away, keep in mind JUST got these new tires on 30 min ago. Pimping gas I'm like "these look weird" seeing from back end. Sure enough he had the 245 in back and 275 in front!! I call him saying we got an issue...he's like I had my new guy do your ****, simple. Sorry. He fixed obviously but can't be too careful.

I have never like Tires Plus either. I went in there once to get tires on my truck. They were going over things and I said I just want tires and no other BS. I was sitting there with my Dad and this older gentleman had a 2 or 3 year old Impala and they told him he needed his brake fluid changed because it was becoming corrosive. 3 year old car. No. I was a mechanic and aircraft mechanic no way brake fluid in a car thats 3 years old starts to corrode...

Once I went in to a dealer (not my Z) and said my clutch was spongy and losing fluid and I think the slave cylinder needs to be changed. The service writer said the fluid is boiling and thats why and that they would change the master cylinder....... I couldn't believe what I heard. I went in to the service manager, slapped down my Airframe and Powerplant license (FAA license to work on aircraft) and said no way in hell the clutch fluid boiled and that I work on jet engines and that was all BS. Got a free slave cylinder and labor free after that...

I didn't drive my Z to the first shop. I brought in the wheels with new tires in a truck and just had them put the new tires on.

My guess would be that your nuts are tighten wrong or at the wrong torque...

Getting tires in a few weeks.. Bringing just the wheels to the shop. Will R&R the wheels myself. This thread does give me an idea of one more thing to look at. Will inspect each wheel on the spin balancer before leaving.

* proper tire mounted to proper wheel (staggered, narrow tires go on narrow wheel)
* bead properly seated on both sides of each wheel
* Asymmetrical tire - side labeled "outside" mounted to the outside of the wheel
* tpms actually rebuilt
* Will remove weights before i bring the wheels in
* No damage to wheels
* valve core snug

Let me get this straight, you had your wheels mounted at a "reputable shop" and it's wobbling... And you are claiming Tires Plus is a joke. WHATTTT???
