Do you drive mostly in drive?
Mostly in Manuel?
Or combo of each?
I use a combo of both, love going through the gears while getting on the exway,
I don't down shift (let the trans do what it does) up shift only. AND I LOVE IT!!!!

LA370z 03-10-2016 07:32 AM

I've never even tried mine. Too afraid to do something stupid and rip that $7,000 transmission up. :icon17:

Will the transmission automatically downshift on it's own while in manual stage?

i have 51k miles on mine and only about 100 miles have been in auto.

i only drive in manual mode. also i do every downshift besides 2>1 because thats bad for the AT.

the AT will auto downshift itself in manual mode to not stall itself out.

as i put above i let it shift from 2 to 1 because thats the best for the tranny. also isometimes when coming to a stop i'll let it drop 3-2-1 on its own.

sidenote you can get a 7AT built for 1000hp for $4500 dont listen to the stealerships grossly inflated prices. :tiphat:

The transmission won't let you kill it. Shift away.

don't rev up neutral and drop the d unless you want a new trannie

JWillis72 03-10-2016 07:51 AM

I leave mine on auto unless I'm at the track or have a reason to accelerate/break fast.

MagmaRed370z 03-10-2016 08:29 AM

I do a combination of both. When I want to relax then Auto, If I want spirited driving then Manual mode for sure. Love the lightning quick downshifts and the sound it makes.

LA370z 03-10-2016 08:41 AM

I'll have to give this a try then but just never knew enough to play around with it on the road. Appreciate the info about it. :tiphat:

I was only guessing at a new AT at $7,000 because I have a 06 Maxima and replaced the trans in it already. It was $4,000 so I figured what was in the Z would get bumped up since, well it's a Z. :hello:

The ECM and TCM are programmed for self-preservation. You can't upshift if that would put engine RPM too low (lugging/stalling condition) and you can't downshift if that would take RPM above red-line. Several other safeguards/nannies programmed in - FSM will have details.

Yes. The 7AT will downshift on it's own, whether in A or M mode, to keep engine RPM up.

Learn something new everyday. :tiphat:

if i had the AT, i would keep it in drive and just use the left paddle to downshift before a turn. unless im in traffic or some winding area and want to hold the gear.

Anyone else get annoyed by the self shifting? I'll occasionally try to engine brake a bit when coming up to a red light, press the downshift paddle D -> 5, down 5 -> 4 (this is at 35ish so not revving it too high or bogging it down) and it will go back to 5; please just do what I tell it to do... /mini rant

Next time you take it out just put it in M and drive the whole trip with the paddles, I try to do this every week or so to stay in practice, every now and then you'll be saying "what's wrong?" as you are traveling at 50mph over revving in 3rd but it won't let you blow it up at normal road pace , " oh yeah" *shift*...

The paddles work in automatic mode (stick in D to the right ) so you can change gears when you want, the indicator in the dash goes from D to whatever # gear your in and reverts back to D if you don't use a paddle again after ~10-15 seconds BUT ( the annoying to me part) it still (not rarely enough) does some gear selection while it knows you are giving it directions thru the paddle shifters by re upshifting just after I tell it to downshift (when throttle off coasting to stop) or rarely (but extra annoyingly) if it and you both decide to upshift it will skip up 2 gears in one go

still, 90+% of the time I don't regret going MT 350Z to AT 370Z.

Maddog 03-10-2016 11:20 AM

It will also downshift more than one gear, if you are in drive and floor it to overtake , pulling the downshift paddle twice makes it jump to the lowest possible gear ie from 5th to 3rd
