I think this thread can also use an argument about manual vs auto.

huhmmm... 3.0 ?

Yeah, there's never been a good 3.0TT motor. All those Supras running around don't count.

It's obvious who's never put aftermarket turbos on a car when they make it sound so easy. I think every one who has done it would have preferred that it was turboed from the factory.

Can you imagine the audacity of Nissan putting a 3.0TT motor in a Z? How could they think that's okay. That goes against the history of the Z-car...

I don't understand what's so hard about dropping the new VR in the existing 370 --

Obviously I know very little about this subject, but wouldn't modifying the 370z engine bay be much cheaper than developing an entirely new platform?

And just give the thing a face lift and you're done. Sounds easy to me (relative to developing a completely new car).

a. turbos, air-water intercoolers on top of the block, piping....its a size/layout issue aka nightmare. it would be a way easier task if you wrote a letter to the heads of nissan and say drop the vk56 in there since that actually fits.....somewhat.

b. the current Z is now in it's 8th model year......it's tired. it's time to move forward. new look, new engine, updated tech.

And it's not just fitting the engine in. Nissan is very particular with where the engine sits in the car, so if the VR fits, but sits a foot towards the front plus the weight of the turbo system, you now have poor weight distribution. Also, air flow for a turbo system is different, so all of the aero, including the shape of the hood and bumpers and where everything is inside the engine bay, would have to be reworked.

This. OEMs don't just drop an engine in a car and call it a day.

Even when they do, the car isn't the same.

Case in point: I owned a Mazdaspeed 6 before my Z. It was essentially a Mazda 6 with a turbo motor shoe-horned in with a new AWD transmission/transfercase unit and an RX-8 rear end. To do this, Mazda had to change the front fenders, A-pillars, hood, floor pan, seats, chassis bracing, the entire engine bay, and most of the interior to compensate. So a lot of parts weren't cross-compatible with the FWD Mazda 6 I4 and V6. Mazda ransacked the parts bin to do the model, but a lot of parts were single use to the Mazdaspeed 6.

It's what makes business sense with Nissan. Should they dump a bunch of money modifying the Z34 chassis to fit the VR when the Z35 is just around the corner? The Z is already fairly low volume, so they are not going to recoup the engineering costs to make a few people happy.

Wishful thinking... I can't disagree having a factory twin turbo Z. Loving boost!
