California License plate?

I recently just bought my Z a few weeks ago, I'm not sure if this has been posted anywhere else but Im pretty lazy. Where do you guys put your front licenses plate in California since I know it's a law here. I don't want to drill screws into my front bumper, and there is no mounting area for it. Thanks for your help and suggestions :D

Great question. I have mine behind my passenger seat. I have a stillen bracket that I'd sell to you. I have no use for it.

Is that strictly enforced in Cali?

felix0121 02-27-2016 12:44 AM

I have it in my mouth and drive. Sometimes I ask to the police whether it is out of the constitution, but they say it is ok.

.. In fact my Z had it installed from my purchase on a used car. :D

Mad props for driving with the license plate in your mouth :yum:

Stillen makes some that you put in the tow hook in front.
Mower Axle makes some solid ones for the nismo bumpers including the '15 and '16 nismo for the extended bumper, also placed in front tow hook.
I had mine in my back cubby since i got my car, put on the Mower Axle plate holder last week, next day got pulled over for going a little past the speed limit. Glad I had the front plate on.

I keep my California plate nailed to a wall in my garage along the rest of my plate collection.

Yes it is, and my car came from Arizona and there isn't anywhere to mount it. Can anyone send a picture or post one of their car with it mounted on the tow hook?

I wouldn't say it is strictly enforced. I lived in San Diego up until 1.5 yrs ago and all three of my cars didn't have front plates. I've never been pulled over for it, but have been pulled over by CHP twice. They don't care. And if you do, you just fix it then with a tow hook mounted holder. Don't stress it. Whatever you do, don't drill holes into your bumper. And use the SEARCH function. Welcome to the forum.

Just hold it in your mouth when you drive like the one guy above

Its not something that will get you pulled over for, but the parking enforcement guys have no problem leaving a ticket on your windshield. I drove in San Diego for about 3 years and another 1.5-2 years in San Francisco without a front plate.......but then one day after work, there it was, under my windshield wiper. bought some butterfly drywall anchors, ran them behind the grill and plate was mounted. Got ticket signed off and went on my way.

You take your chances in California with no front plate. Each area seems to enforce the law to different levels.

I do not run a front plate on any of my Z cars but I know I run the risk of being pulled over. Then comes discovery of open warrants, finding contraband I forgot about, having to explain the blood stains, cavity searches and then prison sex...

What are you going to do...

alangoooo 02-27-2016 03:49 PM

Mower Axle for nismo bumper. Shipped super quick too. Makes my car not look as nice but def can't afford to get a ticket for right now.

OP wanted a pic of the bracket and I no longer have mine installed.

OP - you are more likely to get a ticketed for a plate violation by a parking enforcement officer than patrol. If you get stopped it won't be primarily for the plate violation. The plate violation would be an add on. Also, many cities aren't even giving you fixits but rather a "shakedown" ticket. You pay $25 for the violation and that's it. If you want to go the correctable violation route, you pay $10, plus proof of correction from one of the 3 agencies California Highway Patrol, Sheriff’s Department, or Department of Motor Vehicles. All this completed within 21 days. Screw that. Here's my $25 donation.

get pulled over 5-6 times and it just becomes stupid not having one... especially at my age at least. it's not that bad... better than looking at sad looking wheels and setups. :icon17:

I'm just glad GA doesn't to fronts.

axmea? 02-27-2016 10:57 PM

Make sense to be a 1 plate state. Saves the state a lot of money.

somms 02-28-2016 06:25 PM

You can usually get away with having no front plate, or having tinted windows. Usually can't get away with both. Stillen tow hook bracket it is.

Does anyone have any experience with this. I like the idea of it but the quality looks a little cheap
