Does this sound right?

When I originally got my Z, my sister helped me co-sign so that I could get a low APR.

Now she's going to buy a home, so I am attempting to refinance the vehicle without her.

The title currently has "Angelica" OR "Jesse"

So I went to my credit union and got approved at an extremely low rate. But then they tell me that I am required by the state of California to pay sales tax...again...on the vehicle.

I paid sales tax when I purchased the vehicle, but to have to pay them again? To me, this sounds absurd. Let me know what you guys think.

If you purchased the vehicle originally and are now just refinancing, then no, you should not have to pay sales tax again. They should realize it is a refi and not a new purchase. Idiots like that would make me hesitant to use that credit union for my loan.

You're telling me! I owe about 11k on the car, and when they told me I would have to pay $800 for the loan I was furious!

Taxes?

BS. Try somewhere else. You are purchasing a loan, not a car.
Good luck.

They're telling me that its a California DMV fee so I will give them a call in a bit.

There's no way, other wise it would be stated on there. "DMV FEE" or "emissions fee" or something other than "sales tax". **** the system brother don't give them anything just like they don't give us ****.

Good thing you're bringing this up too because I need my car refinanced so I'll be putting up with this crap too. Further make sure that when you change the title that your sister claims it as a gift. Assuming that step is necessary.

If you are changing the title from You-OR-Her to just You, that may be considered a sale. If your Sister is OK with it, I'd just leave her name on it.

Edit: If Sister needs to get your car off of her credit report, then you'll probably just have to suck it up and pay the sales tax. :( I'm guessing that a change of owner on the title would be considered a new sale and be taxed even here in AR.

I would think that if ur sis just gifted the car to you then there would be no sales tax involved,,might take some time to do paperwork wise,,,i dunno, I just live in CA and it wears U down after many years.:p

The verdict.

Siblings mean nothing in California at least. They state every other family combination except siblings.

She offered to keep it as is, but I'm gonna do the right thing and "rebuy the car."

I need a drink...

The fees and taxes on these types of transactions are not unique to CA.
