Recall was by VIN, so apparently yours wasn't in the VIN list. There are multiple threads here on how to resolve it, most involve a large rubber mallet, beating the crap out of the steering lock to get it to release, then pulling the fuse or cutting the brown wire....

If you take a look underneath for the steering wheel lock, you can see the module under the steering wheel column. Else, it's just empty revealing a rectangular cutout where the lock would be.

It's a silver metal box right under the steering column. Once you're on you back and looking up you'll see it. Beat it like it stole your wife!

Just got a new Z and honestly i thought that recall would fix the issue, if this car had a faulty lock. I'm getting an intelligent key light (orange light all the way to the left) and i will not go to ACC mode or start...but i guess i'll try smacking it, the wheel is not locked by the way but from reading all the threads on this that doesn't mean that its not faulty.

I think the steering wheel lock has to do with the year of the car, not the year he joined this forum.....lol. - jk

His initial post states, "2010 Base".

Nissan's recalls are the biggest cover-your-a$$

ESCLs Revisions A, B, and C have been recalled. They first started installing Rev D versions in late 2010 models IIRC. Except there were numerous Rev D failures documented on this forum before even the recall was issued. In 2012 they removed the ESCL entirely yet still won't acknowledge that the Rev D model is failure-prone like the previous three versions

They started removing them sometime in the 2011 model year. Luckily, my 2011 Nismo doesn't have one.

Completely agree with the rest though. The real fix Nissan should have instituted was to recall all Z's with a steering lock, remove the steering lock, and then reflash the computer so that it doesn't care about a steering lock anymore.

I took mine out and beat the crap out of it. Rubber mallet? Oh no I used a nice square block of aluminum and smacked it flat against the flat area of silver box. Mind you if it doesn't work you will be out a lot of money, so make the smacking cout for something. Just my 2 cents.

Disabling the steering column lock was the first thing I did to my '11. It was less than 3 days that it was in my possession and the fuse was pulled; recalled or otherwise, I didn't bother to find out.

What I couldn't believe was Nissan followed what GM did with the C5. After many, many incidents, fixes, refixes, and complaints, GM finally gave up on electric steering column lock; had the lock plate removed and a "harness" installed to mimic the electrical resistance. That was in 2003. You guessed it, Nissan though it was a good idea for Z34. I was so beyond pissed when I heard the buzzing noise in my '11.

If any of you ever encountered the Nissan engineer who thought and designed it, could you bitch-slap him/her for me? Thanks.

Just the annoying lag once in awhile when trying to start the car.
