As mentioned, modern engines don't follow this same need quite like older vehicles. But the idea is that the break in period will be the period during which the most contaminants (mostly metal) are deposited into the oil because the engine parts are still wearing in. Ideally, you change the oil immediately after the break-in period to remove all these metal contaminants.
Lots of people like to do 3500 mile oil changes, so if you do the first change before 1500 miles, the next change should be around 5000 miles. I typically go with a 5K mile interval or shorter depending on how hard I drove the car during that period. My manual says 7500 miles for a normal interval.

Dealers are stupid. Even my manual says 7500 miles for OCI.

anyways after 5000km i notice my car burns a bit of oil. my first change i went to a few hundred under 8000km. forgot how far after but was about middle on the stick and put in about half a quart? or so. i change at 5000km now and the oil is only a bit under the H hole. i check my oil/brake/clutch fluids for any changes. clutch fluid i expect to darken but should not change in level. brake shouldn't move. |

It will if your pads are worn down significantly. Most people make the mistake of just topping it off when it goes down.

I noticed that my Z burns a bit of oil but seems to be getting better like stated above
1st ever oil change done at 1500 miles = oil came out nasty and only ~3.8qts came out...filled with Amsoil synthetic. 2nd oil change at 5000 miles = oil came out pretty dark, got about 4.3qts out this time Currently car is at 7500 miles and just added .2 qt yesterday to top off to proper level. So, based on the burn rate it seems to be improving. Going from a full quart to what I expect will end up about .4 qt by the time my next oil change comes around at ~10k miles. Based on this improvement, it should stop burning completely by right around the 15k oil change, like Kenchan stated above ^^ Mine might take until 20k, I've not babied it |

my levels went up after they changed the pads and they drained a bit of the brake fluid. |

if ur car is completely cold just pull up the yellow handle dipstick. if the oil is at the top dot, u're fine. i kept the level at about 85-90% full for the first 2yrs as anything more would just keep burning off.
since the 3rd year i kept it at the top dot. if ur engine is warm, pull up the yellow handle dip stick, wipe off the oil with a paper towel. then dip it back in, count to 5, pull up to see where the oil is. dat's it. if near the bottom dot, add 1/2 quart of oil and repeat until you get the level at or near the top dot. |

It is no surprise to me. I have seen a brand new Nissan Pathfinder come in with a rod/hole in the side of the block at 15K miles. The oil filter part number ended in a 1. That means the oil filter had never been changed. Service manager saw it and said, were gonna put a new long block in it anyway. So we did. It baffles me how many folks forget to check and change the oil in the correct amount of time/mileage.

A guy I work with, bought a new vette with the z51 package. He didn't know how to check oil on it. He couldn't even find the dip stick. I had to show him the dip stick, and how to check oil with the dry sump system on the car. I knew more about his car then he did. And I don't even like vettes. Just goes to show you how stupid people are about their vehicles. Don't read the manual, just jump in and drive the wheels off of it. Complain about it when it breaks.
