Exhaust Advice

I will be looking at getting an aftermarket exhaust finally after owning the car since I bought it. I am looking for a deep tone sound. I like the sound of the stock G35 but I want something similar just a bit louder. I don't like SUPER loud nor ricey. I know there are quite a few options out there but to my luck, I haven't heard any of these in person.

One one of the options I had in mind is the Fast Intentions Non-Resonated Catback exhaust.

Can anyone help me choose the right one with any sound clips you might have or simply suggestions? My budget at this time is less than $1,500. I would probably pair it with the Stillen Gen 3 Cold Air Intake.

Last question - would I need it tuned with a mod as simply as aftermarket exhaust and intake? I'm thinking no but someone delight me lol.

Thanks!

Don't bother getting a cold air intake, they're sorta built-in to the 370 and offer so little return.

No tune required, not gonna run too lean that way.

I have the FI non-resonated exhaust.

I am guessing you are looking for cat backs? Get a set of HFC's and FI's cat back, from what people say HFC's are great sounding and open up some hp. FI makes great exhausts. Maybe someone with a FI can chime and help you out. AAM makes a 2.5 inch h pipe catback that you can pair with short tails but that will be really loud.

Yes, BUT...

Get a 12 or 18" resonator if you're gonna do cats / test pipes. Otherwise it's just a loud stupid noise. :icon17:

barncobob 11-11-2015 11:27 AM

this a pro FI crowd, things get ugly ifn u do something else:stirthepot::eek:

TerribleONE 11-11-2015 11:37 AM

Fast Intentions with 18" res will give you what your looking for

kenchan 11-11-2015 12:59 PM

sorry to say but there is no exhaust for the Z that will sound anywhere close to the G35C's signature tone.

one reason why i kept my G's exhaust stock. :D

Wait since when is it ok to run a intake with no tune or even exhaust (if cat delete?) Thought this could cause you to run super lean. If anything you would need it to clear the engine codes.

I am confused big time with the CAI now. Some say yes, some say no to CAI. Is it just better to drop in the K&N filters with the Z1 silicone plumbing???
I dont want to spend money on CAI if there is no gain in HP.

Cheers.

The air source is outside the engine bay from the factory.

If you can tell a difference before and after your CAI install i will be supremely impressed. I couldn't, and sold mine accordingly.

Spend the $300 on some fancy wheels / tires / brakes instead.
- But then again that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

i got the stillent gen 3 intakes and don't regret it one bit.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Armytrix, Tomei, or Motordyne yet lol.

It looks like Fast Intentions "Resonated" Catback might be my choice with stock cats. If I decide to turbo or supercharge it then I will swap for HFC. Probably not going to happen in a while.

Anyone have any sound clips of their exhaust set up?

Most of the Zs in Chicago are running the FI Catback and they sound/look very nice. You'll probably be happy with the 18" resonator with stock cats.

I personally run the Ark Grip CBE w/stock cats and love it. I think it sounds deeper than the FI and it has less interior drone (barely any actually).

Any chance you have a video of the Ark Grip on your car? :-)

Ah, yes I have also heard of ARK thanks for bringing that brand up to my attention. Well, I haven't been to any meets in the city but would like to. Any more info on such meets?

Thanks for your input btw. Very helpful.

BlackZMamba 11-11-2015 04:54 PM

Last question - any difference between 12" and 18" resonator? Sorry I'm not an expert on exhaust systems yet. Just want to learn what I should expect if I go with one size or the other.

I agree I have the same with OEM cats still and I've noticed substantial gains in whp and in overall sound.

There is a car in my car port/parking lot in my apartment complex that has a sensitive horn when it comes to anything. This car now parks on the other side of the parking lot because in the morning when I cold start, if it was within 5 or 6 cars of me the alarm would go off lol. Owner got pissed at me once lol. I revved my engine again setting her alarm off again lol

As for the resonators, it helps to attempt break up the sound of each combustion into more of hum sound and mellows it a bit as it passes through the CBE. Also gives a deeper sound with that conversion of combustion.

:driving::tup:

Breadz 11-11-2015 08:18 PM

I have fi with no resonators and love it. Can be loud sometimes though id suggest the 18 inch resonators for you

Volume and drone. The latter will have less.

The Chicago Z crowd is pretty dead. I just attend Sunday cars and coffee. Great guys abd great mix of cars. Nothing is really happening now until spring though. Everyone has their car in storage. I'll be putting mine away shortly as well.

Op,

This can give you an idea of the varoius exhausts setups.

I strongly suggest hitting up a local meet so you can get first hand experience with how they look and sound.

Videos sometimes doesn't do them justice.

Not dead just hiding in Aurora:tup:

OP, for the money, performance and sound you cant beat FI. Throw on some nice HFC (assuming you dont want to swap test pipes all the time) and the sound will be amazing.

I've heard it on a nismo once around here, managed to chat with him at a Chili's and he had a FI 18 res, Berk HFC and G3's. I nearly melted.. Never thought I would hear it before I had it

~37oZ~ 11-12-2015 01:55 PM

Honestly, The Tanabe Medallion exhaust is amazing. It's like the stock exhaust tone from a 350Z/G35 but louder and more aggressive. Zero drone or rasp. Very high quality as the rest of the products.

What don't you like about it? It has the stock VQ hum just louder with no drone??

I like the medalion's tone that is not the issue. (i run it on my dd even).

but even on the Z, it DOES NOT sound like the factory G35C's exhaust note. I know cause i still have my 04' G and ive heard sounds clips of the tanabe on a Z.

Maybe it has something to do with the 3.7L? It does sound different in person from any clip I've heard, that VQ hum is too deep to pick up on a video clip unless you're using a high end mic. I run this exhaust on my 370Z, i can tell you IT DOES have a very noticeable VQ hum when going through the gears ESPECIALLY in a tunnel or passing other cars. I do have the Ypipe and intake if that matters but IT DOES has at the very least a very similar note! :p

kenchan 11-12-2015 04:23 PM

^^ maybe.. not sure. but then again i dont need to replicate a G35C tone since i have the real thing. :D

my Z runs the fujimura. sounds great.

yah, +1 on blip throttle in tunnels and underpasses!

That G35 tone is the VQ tone, which I also have the real thing lol :p my exhaust is also brand new like 60miles on it so maybe it changes after break in. Hopefully not! I love this tone. JDM exhausts for the win!

kenchan 11-12-2015 04:53 PM

cool then u and i knowz wat a real factory G35C sounds like  it is the only factory exhaust note i like from japan besides the LFA

BlackZMamba 11-12-2015 04:56 PM

Thanks for all the great advice and links guys. It sounds like I will have to go with either a 12" or 18" resonator but I'm now leaning towards the 12" resonators to still get a nice louder deep tone note. I won't mind a little bit of drone. It is not really my daily driver but do drive it more often in the Spring and Summer. :icon17:

Many here are happy and satisfied FI customers. You cannot go wrong with them. If you want to go against the grain, Motordyne ART pipes.

kidicenj 11-13-2015 09:46 AM

Have to go with FI its a good first step. Then check the for sale thread for a used Berk HFC or FI HFC. You'll be very happy with the sound

b15 11-13-2015 10:22 AM

Another thing to consider with drone is if you have an AT vs MT. AT will drone more because it'll always want to reach the highest gear and lug the engine (in D mode). MT you can just shift around the drone spot.
