Saw someone run a red light

On my way home tonight I was stopped at a red light in the turn lane waiting to turn left. Saw someone comin up fast behind me and they just blew through the red light in a Cadillac sedan. It hadnt even just turned red either, like it had been red for a few minutes already, it was a long red light. They were probly going 50 or 60 and cars had been going through the intersection right before the car ran the red light. I just thought wow. So that's how that happens. I normally don't think too much about it but now every time I come up to an intersection I'll be thinking about it. I mean that is really scary for sure. That car could've killed someone. It could've been anyone just cruisin through that intersection and just got killed. That is sad.

Hopefully that individual gets into a single vehicle accident that harms no one else. Unfortunately with all the safety features of modern cars, idiots are being kept alive with little repercussions. If they got banged up a significant amount when they wreck their cars, maybe they'll learn better.

Billibob22 10-28-2015 06:37 AM

Lots of sad people out there.. Unfortunately..

mishuko 10-28-2015 07:01 AM

the unfortunate part is cars are designed primarily for head on or rear end collisions. the poor car that potentially get t-boned would have suffered horrific damages and injury at the least at those speeds.

I'm actually surprised when someone actually stops for a red light on my street. But it still pales in comparision to cyclists in NYC.

You should travel to some other parts of the world and just observe how people drive. Green lights mean go and red lights mean go faster. Crazy! You don't expect that in North America but it happens all the time.

Red means go faster in california. Yellow actually means go even faster. A stop sign usually means don't completely stop and just roll on through.

Firebase99 10-28-2015 10:09 AM

Most parts of Asia, assuming there are traffic signals, they are merely weak suggestions.

It's all fun & games until someone dies. Crazy world we live in.

mishuko 10-28-2015 12:36 PM

as a cyclist i can attest that we have some real jackasses.

real suicidal jackasses.

Earlier today a Ford focus blew past a redlight as I was turning right. The light for me was green for about 3 seconds, and then WOOSH, the Focus flies by at maybe 70. Had to slam my breaks and take a second. That guy would have killed us all, I thought.

A few lights later I'm beside the guy and there's a car seat in the back seat with a little one inside, I saw the arms moving in the air. All I could do was shake my head in disgust.

There are some really, really stupid people out there.

srbrubak 10-28-2015 01:34 PM

This happens all the time in CR. When you are sitting at a red light and it goes green, you don't look to see if a car will run the red, you look to see how many run the red. Yes there are a lot of stupid drivers. The sad part is you can't fix stupid.

Swindler 10-28-2015 01:38 PM

For sure, it's all bad. Im worried about just cruisin through a green light that's been green, guess all I can do is slow down a bit to try an make sure it's clear. Scary stuff.

People like that should be put in a special place that consists of no one else, that way they can never hurt anyone but themselves with their own stupidity.

2015nismo 10-28-2015 03:33 PM

And they should be denied the right to procreate.

:tiphat:

birdman71 10-28-2015 05:46 PM

STRONGLY :iagree:

Rusty 10-28-2015 05:52 PM

Video is unavailable for myself anyway. But yeah there are some countries where driving like that is the normal.

lhinojos 10-28-2015 06:12 PM

Bout a year ago, I was waiting at an intersection when the light turned green and I dont remember why but I hesitated. And as soon as I put in first and I was about to start moving forward, a teenage girl flys through the light on her cellphone. If I was in a hurry that day, I surely would have been t-boned. Taught me be to not try to time green lights anymore. I just wait and go at ease.

similar thing happened to me today. was making a left at a 4 way stop and luckily, in the corner of my eye, i noticed this old camry flying down the road and i slammed on my brakes and held onto my horn hoping he'd hear me and stop. he runs the stop sign going at least 45 mph and totally oblivious to the fact that i was in the middle of the intersection holding the horn.

For sure, I am guilty of being in a hurry too and taking off from lights sometimes but I'm just gonna try and be super careful now lol seriously

Do you have a dash cam installed in your vehicle? You should have captured it.

Swindler 10-28-2015 08:26 PM

Nah I don't have a dash cam unfortunately

Nice TopGear quote!!! :rofl2:

37zeroZ 10-28-2015 09:59 PM

It's the, "I got to check my phone" folks that causes the vast majority of issues on the road.

People surfing/texting/playing with their online devices (cell phones) causes more accidents that those who drink and drive. I condone neither, but those who are on their online devices are the worst.

NISMO IX 10-28-2015 10:05 PM

Yes and you can usually tell when you are behind one because they slow down a little serve a bit over the white line then the yellow, then they miraculously straighten right out and go 5mph over the speed limit, and repeat.

Woah, another Iowa Z? You ever make your way down to Des Moines?

Saw someone run a stop sign recently. She ran it straight into my Z.

Both myself and my Z will survive. Sadly, around here (and apparently everywhere from the sound of this thread) people seem to have this mentality of "meh, I have insurance" and fail to realize that they are piloting tons of metal at breakneck speeds. Seems most people don't care and/or realize the responsibility you hold driving a vehicle.

It's a bit unnerving, but it seems to me that the faster and more capable your average car gets, the more people take for granted. I hope, within our lifetime, automation gets to the point where the 90% of those who have no regard for others can be Driven, while the rest of us are allowed to Drive.

Kind of unrelated to the red light but I had an issue recently in regards to people not caring. You know those rent-to-own companies that sell furniture, electronics, etc.? Yeah, I was going 55 down a 50mph rural country road(yes we have roads in Maine lol), and this box truck made for hauling couches and such was 3 car lengths to my back end, and moving closer. To create distance I dropped to 3rd and pulled away to 70mph briefly to create distance. The SOB got right back up there and even closer. At the next light I had an exchange of words that follow like this:

Me: Are f%$#&@g crazy?

Driver: I gave you 3 car lengths!

Me: Your truck weighs three times as much as me, I can stop three times quicker. Back the "eff" off

Driver: Well, you were going 70!

Me: Your place of business will receive a call from me in just a few minutes! (finger up to gesture he's #1)

I drove off purposely out of my way to get away from him! Question that cannot be answered, how do you reason with ignorant stupid? You just can't and hope for the best.

Glad you and your Z will survive.

dant1127 10-29-2015 08:32 AM

NISMO IX, that's on the opposite side, but same field, as when we have the pleasure of watching a driver rush to pass the car in front of him/her, but fail to look, cut off an 18-wheeler who was minding his own business in the middle lane, then slam on their brakes because, as a cursory glance would have shown, there are also cars in THAT lane. Said driver, who accelerated 20-30mph over their previous speed, now overcorrects their stopping and slams on brakes. Now we have a fully-loaded truck slamming brakes to avoid the idiot in front of him, who seems completely oblivious to what has happened.

To the General Public: just because the car behind you is considered at-fault, that doesn't give you the right to risk his/her life, as well as the lives of those of us around you, because you need your pumpkin spice mocha latte right now instead of in 1 more minute.

On top of the fact when you ride someone's @ss.... You are distracting and endangering that driver!!! What I guess I am saying is part of your responsibility as a driver is to periodically check your mirrors but when you ride the @ss of that driver in front of you, you are now taking more focus off of what is going on in front of him or her.

You should never engage in a mind battle of the ignorant and stupid people just because they will wear you down with their ignorance and stupidity to the point where you lose due to their experience with being ignorant and stupid. Its best to just drive away haha, either that or sit there with your window up laughing at them lol :stirthepot:
