I'm not taking a position either way here, but I just want to say that buying distressed businesses happens all the time. Both in the public and private markets. I'm not in Gamma/GTM's balance sheets, however, if value is seen in the business via assets/goodwill/r&d/patents/future cash flows/etc., it's not uncommon for a company to come in and buy that company at a discount because it is distressed. Sounds like they are making good on prior mishaps. They may have negotiated that into the price of the sale. We don't know the details of what they paid. It may have been quite a deal to get all of GTMs technological development for what Gamma paid for GTM. Time will tell...
