Well the time finally came to sit down and buy my Z. The dealer was being.. well a dealer and started playing games with numbers that we had not agreed to and that he said he could get lower.
Anyway, walked out thinking I was going to go to the next nissan dealer. Decided to walk right next door to the hyundai dealership the whole time dismissing the Gen Coupe in my mind. Saw it in pics and it was ugly. Let me tell ya, in person it looks a helluva lot better especially the track model with the 19 inch wheels and red brembo's. Car comes with pretty much everything. Heated leather seats, Touch screen Nav, bluetooth, climate control, shift paddles, push button start, HID lights, limited slip dif, brembos, track suspension, 312 horsepower (with premium Fuel) and the list goes on all for $31,500. I was pretty amazed at the quality of this car and how well equipped it is for its price point. Still I said, this thing probably drives like a heap of sh*t. Had to give it a good test drive. Took it out and surprise surprise this thing can move and takes the corners very nicely. The shift paddles are very responsive and the Brembos bring you to a stop in a hurry. Its a little harsh on the shitty jersey roads because of its track setup but that is to be expected. 0-60 comes in at about 5.8 seconds. Not quite as fast as the Z but honestly its still damn quick. It has a better exhaust sound then the Z also. A nice deep pur when you hit the gas. The Z is a bit harsh sounding. The interior is nicer then the Z. No doubt about it. Its immediately obvious when you get in, different league. I do wish that it had 25-30 more HP to match the Z in speed but those numbers are more bragging rights then anything because you cant even come close to pushing the Gen Coupe to its limits on the street. None the less, that extra 25 HP would help me match you guys on the track. It all comes down to this, I love the 370z its a great car. But with the genesis coupe 3.8 track I get pretty much everything the Z has at almost 10 grand less!! I just could not justify the Z after driving the Genesis Coupe. ![]() ![]() Last edited by nurburgring; 11-02-2009 at 03:37 PM. |

Nice write-up on the Genesis.
I, too, looked into the Genesis Coupe. Even have a friend that could guarantee me a few hundred below invoice at a nearby dealership on it. But from the exterior alone, I could not choose it over the Z. It has some hideous lines on it that resemble the Tiburon, which is my vote for the ugliest car since 1990. I don't agree with you on the interior either...I prefer the Z. I am definitely looking at Hyundai for my family car though, maybe the Santa Fe or Veracruz. |

Personally, I clicked with the Z. There wasn't much else I looked at from the "unpractical" side of things, the Mustang GT / GT500 being the above and below options...
If neither of those, I'd have gotten a new truck or a jeep. |

Glad you got what you wanted!
I have read that, minus power/straight line, the Genesis is pretty competitive with the Z. at least you didn't crash the Genesis on the test drive... ![]() |

Did not know the gen coupe had nav yet? Also thought it was not going to be in the track model?
The issue I had with the gen coupe after testing driving a Z then moving to the gen coupe, the coupe is definitely slower in all aspects. Not a huge deal when you look at the price, but considering I paid 31,500 and just lost the luxury features I think I came out ahead.

you got the sport model Z for 31,500? limited slip dif, wheels, spoiler etc..? i assume so because you said "lost the luxury features". if so that is a great deal. |

Yep, base with sport, I was offered a track 2009 gen coupe with whatever it came with in 2009 for 28,500. The guy was not pushy about it at all and it got me thinking, but after the test drive I told him flat out the Z just took it away with the performance. He was not upset, and agreed, but the gen coupe is a solid competitor and at the cheap price it gives you plenty of room to do anything you want.

Yep, with a touring sport z with nav you are looking at 38-40k which is a huge step, but if you just want the power and no luxury you can lower that price easily. Plus I have plans to re-do the seats anyways so I did not want to drop the extra money and then down the road replace or mess with the seats.

Hyundai has come a long way. I worked there for a short period a few years ago and witnessed a signifcant effort to leave the reputation of the past behind them and move forward with better products. I am happy that they have improved their product line to the point that they are no longer considered a low cost, disposable car alternative to the other asian OEMs.
Costco had a Genesis coupe on display a few weeks ago and I checked it out for a few minutes. It's a good looking car that looked like it could deliver. Not my complete cup of tea ultimately but I can see why you bought it. Sorry to hear the Nissan dealer jerked you around but congrats on your new car. Enjoy!

Smart buy man, I certainly think the Genesis is a sweet ride. Unfortunately car buyers have really long memories so Hyundai is still frowned upon by the uninformed but I really do think the Genesis is a worthy competitor to our beloved Z and once we as consumers get over ourselves (myself included), more buyers of our ilk will seriously consider the Hyundai product.
There is no excuse for the green color though. |
