Could criminals hack your Z and simply drive it away?
Quote from New York Times link below...
"In recent months, there has been a slew of mysterious car break-ins in Los Angeles. What’s odd is that there have been no signs of forced entry. There are no pools of broken glass on the pavement and no scratches on the doors from jimmied locks." :shakes head: New York Times: Keeping Your Car Safe From Electronic Thieves 2014 Jeep Cherokee, a 2014 Infiniti Q50, or a 2015 Escalade rated most vulnerable. Researchers find 2014 models of Dodge Viper, Audi A8, Honda Accord are the least likely to be hit by hackers. The World's Most Hackable Cars |
Yes, get lo jack.
|
To be honest, I don't think thieves would be likely to steal a 370z because they're quite rare in my community and it'll only cause unwanted attention.
|
Wow, ours Z's are open for this kind of theft. Never leave mine out of my sight, but still and eary thought as it only takes a few seconds to do.
|
Yes, if you're close to your car they can just use one of these.

This is not something you want to throw in open visible car specific forum. That was the problem with Honda-tech.com, people training others how to steal cars. But no biggy. If you get paranoid or if you see people trying to F with your car with remotes. All you have to do is take the battery out of your keyfob, and figure out the rest, you can start by taking the key out and opening your door
|
Just need something like this:
Wireless RF Isolation Key Fob Security - Select Fabricators Inc http://www.amazon.com/Keyfob-RFID-Si...dp/B00Y3FLYWG/ Security through obscurity only benefits the thieves. For all the amateurs that might want to try from sifting a forum, the defenses are far better learned. Ultimately it's all about delaying the inevitable but unless you can hire armed guards 24/7 if someone wants in they're going to get in. Most anti-theft is about detecting and/or delaying until the popo can be called or you can arm yourself... |
hack my Z? probably. steal my Z? probably.
would i get mad? probably. |

You're forgetting that these hackers cannot do this to any car (specifically the Jeep, since it's the only one that was remotely hacked) off of the lot.
They heavily modified the code, even went through 2-3 ECU's before they got it right, to do what they did. The hackers would have to swap ECU's in your vehicle first in order to take control, or plug directly into the OBDII port (and be inside your car with you). The fear mongering by the media is strong with this story. If you're talking about just flat out stealing it, then any car with keyless start is vulnerable, all the way up to Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. |
haboob- please take out the logic and post. :shakes head:

I'd probably buy something else. Not that I don't like it, but I no longer like the payment. |

Yes, I don't know about hacking but those devices posted in the first page are RF amplifiers... It picks up the signal from your key fob from up to 300 meters. Like posted in the first page too, There are little RF blocking pouches you can buy that will block this signal.
I do neighborhood watch in my little town and in 1 night a thief went on a stroll and used one of these devices to get into a New Charger, Ford F150 SVT Raptor, BMW 530IT, Buick Regal GS and another car I can't remember... Over the course of a few weeks he broke in to several other cars the same way and stole 2 cars... A 2014 Mini Pooper S and a Lexus GX460 both found a few towns over without damage. Since our cars are keyless like the 2 that were stolen it can be used to start and drive the car away. I saw the guy the night he got into the Raptor, I know it was him because I saw him a few blocks away at 2AM holding an ipad... An Ipad was stolen from the Raptor and the location tracker cloud thingy was turned off around that same time. He stopped once I posted a description of the guy and we haven't had anything happen since (he was definitely on the neighborhoods facebook page or someone recognized him from my description and told him he's been spotted). |
Now, with the RF blocking pouches, you'd have to take your keys out of the pouch each time you want to get into your car, no?
Kind of defeats the purpose of keyless entry and start. Thankfully the RF range on the Z's fob is very small, so I'd pretty much be watching them steal my car. I never take it out and press the button to lock/unlock, so that signal is never prevalent. |
It may be a pain but the best would be to install an on and off switch on the key fob in order to disconnect the battery power.

Eh. Much subjective... at home, I'm in a garage so wouldn't be a concern at all. At work, it might be when I get to my desk I would put the fob from my pocket into the pouch. When I leave work, take out of pouch back in pocket then walk to car and push the smart button as normal. If you're parked outside at home (apartment or no garage or whatever), you would repeat. If you're just popping in the store or starbucks you might not bother... But if you're paranoid, you might. Quote:
