Probably has to do a lot with age as well. Hearing in the upper frequencies decreases pretty progressively with age. My 55 year old father cannot hear anything above 11kHz,

Probably has to do a lot with age as well. Hearing in the upper frequencies decreases pretty progressively with age. My 55 year old father cannot hear anything above 11kHz, while I can hear up to around 17~19kHz. That is a pretty broad range, especially for "high-pitched noises."
