Camaros are starting to be the new Mustangs? These things are turning up EVERYWHERE now, makes me glad I didnt go with the Camaro and got the Z instead, I've seen maybe 3 in the city since i've had mine, i've already seen 15 Camaros today. Funny thing though, not one attempted to rev on me, shocking really. Guess they know whats up.

What's up is that a Camaro SS will spank a Z handily in acceleration.

The melt-your-tires-at-every-stoplight crowd has their icon back. The Z was never meant to roll with them. We should be glad they're not acting like jerks, at least not where you are, it seems.

Really? You do know that a Camaro SS will crap all over you in any contest of speed, right? Just making sure, in case you forgot the smiley after the sentence to denote sarcasm. LOL, oh yeah...they'll beat you a road-course, too.

Still, not a huge fan of the Camaro. It's a good car all around at a great value, but a sports-car it is not. And, yes...they are more common than the Z, but that's partially due to the wider range in price from base V6 to fully-loaded SS.

There will be 3 2SS Camaros and 2 GT Premium Mustangs by the end of the year in the parking lot at my job. I still have the only 370z. (there is an 81 280Z).

The camaro guys are talking trash, sure. They have over 420 HP and lbs/ft torque!!! Between traffic lights, I'm sure they'll get me unless they don't know how to drive.

Those guys throw out the following all the time at work:

- They paid less for a fully loaded 2SS than my Nismo.
- They have a back seat.
- They get better gas mileage (um...no)
- They are faster.

Usually the only comeback I need is, "Yeah, but I have a Z."

What are you smoking? In a straight line, they might have a small edge, which they should considering that overbloated engine in them. But a road course? You kidding? Nothing on the lower end of a cayman s can hang to the z on a track.

"a sports car it is not", as you say. So why say i the same breath that it will beat a 370Z on a road course? Makes no sense.

From Car & Driver:

"Although looking over the long, beveled hood (of the SS) is a view every muscle-car fan will relish, the low roof, high waistline, and wall-like rear pillars make the car drive big (not good for twisty two-lanes), a complaint we also level at the Challenger.

And these specs tell me a competent driver in a 370Z on a road course will "crap all over" a Camaro SS:

Huh? How doesn't it make sense..there are many non sports-cars that will beat sports-cars around a track. I fail to see how you can't make that connection.

Outright performance has nothing to do with a car's classification as a "sports-car". The Camaro is not a sports-car. The Z is.

6th gear slower? is it just too tall of an overdrive? (to get better gas mileage, I assume?)

Gentlemen, I didnt start this thread to begin a flame war, It was an observation and I was curious to know if anyone had seen the same things.

Surely you're joking... You DO realize the SS's curb weight is 3800 lbs right? Sounds like youre doing some magazine racing yourself. So far i've seen one get beat by a stock turbo Cobalt SS, and a slightly modded SRT-4 at the track. All that power is fine, but when you're smoking your tires through 3rd, you're not going to win races. And on a road course? your on crack bro. And I never eluded to my car being faster by saying "I guess he knows whats up", the fact is, the Z is more refined, far better looking, and with even drivers, can keep up.

All of this hypothetical crap is annoying. People are quick to dismiss the capabilities of Mustangs and Camaros around a road track... they're too heavy, they're old tech, they won't handle...

Yes, they are heavy. Yes, they are (or were) old tech. But have you ever seen one driven in anger? They may not have the technological advantages but they aren't to be taken lightly.

And the drag racing stuff is BS, too. Driver competence is half the battle. There are plenty of guys here that couldn't even muster a 14 second pass at sea level in a 6MT if their lives depended on it. And somewhere, some kid in a Scion tC that saw a 370 pass at 14.7 is talking about how his bro with an I/E tC can keep up with any 370 because they barely break into the 14s yo!

There are also way more variables than just driver variables, one reason I hate comparing person X v. person Y in different locations. Just because someone ran a 14 does not mean he is slow or does not know how to drive.

Also, mustangs are very capable track cars stock and have a nice upgrade from factory to push them even better.
