Yes, a tune will help you increase your mpg's. But since you are going to have more power at your disposal.... guess what? The addiction for power will retain your mpg's at a low rate.
Is not so much about the amount of power (I mean yes and no), but rather about driving style and other things in between. Also the type of traffic that you find yourself i.e. highway versus city versus bumper to bumper traffic.

you should look at the other side of the coin.. many people would kill for a 2.9 commute to work

My wife drives 60 miles each way. I don't want to hear any bitching.

3 miles to work. Usually catch 3-4 lights each day to/from work. Average is roughly 17mpg. Cruises on the weekend to the GF's house which is a half hr ride at 60mph and the average consumption is 19.2mpg.

I've averaged about 20 mpg so far... I just bought the car in February with 11,500 miles on it. My commute is about 25 miles round trip, mix of city/highway. I'm happy with that because I used to have a 2004 G35 coupe and averaged 18 mpg.
I have a 6MT roadster, stock. |

City driving 16-17mpg, highway 23-25mpg, mix of city and highway 19-21mpg. I think those are normal scores for the Z. 2014, stock tune 13k miles, no change from adding k&n drop in filters, muffler delete, and an ecu reset.

City driving (stop and go) traffic lights and all the other stuff in between is what kills mpg's. As a matter of fact I went for a nice drive all the way up to West point military academy yesterday with cruise control on (never went above 65 mph) and I was averaging well into the high 20's. The roads up there are in bad shape and there are hills all around. My trip was about 43 miles each way and I'm bone stock (well, not me but the car is).
