AT - Manual Shift Mode Question
 

Hoping that I'm just missing something. When I put the shift lever in the manual shift gate (pushing left from D) the car goes into manual mode as expected. When I pull back it drops to the next lowest gear, but when I press forward the dash indicator displays "D" and the car goes back to full auto (as if the shift lever was pushed right again). The paddles work fine for both up and down and the car stays in manual mode.

Am I missing something or if this something that I should have service look at?

If you have it in manual mode, and push the stick forward, it should change to the next gear up, not go back in to auto mode. Can you post a video?

Yeeeeah I don't think it's supposed to do that.

When you press it forward it should go up to the next gear, not into drive hehe.

I'd have it checked out.

It's horn fluid. Get it right. And I think my powerband is worn, time to replace it.

Sorry. I get those confused. Got stranded on the side of the road once because of a worn powerband. Taking my Z to the dealership tomorrow to have the air in my tires changed.

Before I ruin this thread, on a serious note...

OP: Normally when you decide to go into manual mode, you want to downshift, right? So all's good when you grab the knob and make the switch... From then on, why wouldn't you just use the paddles (for both upshifts and downshifts)? The whole point of those is that you don't have to take your hands off the wheel to shift like us MT peasants do. I'd think grabbing the knob again would indicate you wanted to go back into automatic mode.:confused:

I'm not saying your situation is normal (someone with an AT can confirm that), it just seems weird to me that you'd choose to upshift like it was a Volvo S40 when you've got flappy paddles like in a Ferrari 458.;)

Ditto on what Duc added. I rarely change gears with the shifter, but, of course, if there is something wrong, I would want it fixed. If I'm understanding you correctly, when you have the shifter in the left position and push forward to go up a gear, the tranny "defaults" back to auto mode. If that is happening, then yes, something is wrong.

As a side note, when you are in auto mode and want to down shift, simply pull back and hold the left paddle, and the transmission will go in to manual mode and step down a gear. Once you stop using the paddles, it will go back to auto mode by itself.

while you're there, just get the full service:

1. topping of alternator fluid
2. topping of starter acid
3. checking/adjusting muffler bearings

Not sure about the OP uses, but for the AT, sometimes it's nice to use the shifter and not the paddles because if you are coming to a stop sign/light, you can just pop it into auto and let the car downshift all the way. Our equivalent of rolling to a stop in neutral I guess.

Thanks for the replies - I was just making sure that I wasn't missing anything and that it was abnormal to drop back into full auto mode when trying to upshift from the shifter. I ask next time I'm in the area of the dealer.

Usually I stay with the paddles once its in manual mode but wanted to double checking with the masses.

Duc - it isnt the clutch, I tried adjusting the spring and it broke so I just removed it.

I read somewhere someone else had similar issue, it turned out to be a switch or connection under the auto stick assembly area. Hopefully it will be something trivia like this for you.

It's not supposed to do that. You should be able to upshift or downshift using paddles or stick (although I only use the paddles).
