Meaning the miata is all about lightweight and driving. Z is more of a balance between enough power to run with muscle cars and enough handling to be a good sports car.

Losing weight is losing weight. The z34 is actually pretty light compared to the G37. Making it under 3000lbs would be super rad

It would be great and it might lose a little, but I think under 3k lbs is not realistic to expect at the pricepoint the Z is at.

Agree with those that say can't get weight under 3,000. Miata is only 167 hp, FRS 200 hp from the factory. Supporting drivetrain can be much smaller/lighter to support this. 400+ hp does require everything to be stronger/heavier unless very expensive materials are used. Low 3K would be excellent, IMHO.
Just another side note, Miata sold under 4,800 in the US last year, Z's sold over 7k. I'm guessing that if Nissan pumps up the Z to over 400 hp, they'll see a dramatic increase in sales. |

Interesting. I see so many Miatas around and I always talk of it being a big success for Mazda that I assumed there were a lot more sold.

I feel that's the point people overlook when they get into these weight arguments. like yea no shit lighter would be better but at this price point of the Z we aren't paying for all carbon fiber pieces, magnesium, etc... like the million dollar super cars that can weigh under 3k pounds with 700+ HP it's a budget sports car in all reality. <50K car with good power, good tech, and a great body. may be just above 3k pounds but that's not bad with the power and handling that comes with the Z

You are correct, it is a big success for Mazda when looking at the big picture. Nissan is #6 in US sales with an 8.5% share, compare it to GM's 17% (#1) and Toyota's 15.5% (#2). Mazda represents only a 2% share in the US, so selling 4,800 Miata's steadily every year, is really good for Mazda.

Theres no chance of the Z35 being under 3K pounds. None. Like FP said, it IS a budget sports car. We'll get aluminum, steel and a carbon fiber drive train. 3400lbs. And if it is under 3K, itll be a SLIGHTLY guttier 86. No thanks.

Exactly. If the Z weighs in at around 3,200 lbs that would be amazing. I'm not happy with how modern day vehicles are getting heavier and heavier but it only makes sense considering all of the "safety standards" on modern cars add weight. Not to mention a quality built car is always going to weigh more due to all of extra electronics, sound system, airbags, and in general quality interior. Like you said Nissan can use lighter and stronger materials but that would cost the consumers more. Last edited by Digital neOn; 02-17-2015 at 05:04 PM. |

Close, hopefully itll be close realistically. Z32 was nipping at the P Turbo back in '91, Z33 was running with E46 M, Z34 handed the Boxster its *** and right there with the S. Unfortunately by 2010 the Germans pulled away and stayed there.

Which is still a hell of a lot higher than the Z's pricepoint not to mention it has a 1.7 liter engine.

The engine and performance are more than adequate, but that is spartan for a DD. If i had $70K for a toy Id get one. I have 2004 accord, 2013 S60 and my GC. Not an option with a $50K budget, Italians are out at this price point.
