Question about synchro rev match sensitivity

Hello everyone,

I had my 2014 370 Nismo for a few months and there was something up with the synchro rev match system that's been bugging me. I love it for downshifts but it's questionable with upshifts. Does anyone notice that certain upshifts come with an additional rev in the throttle? Sometimes if I'm fast shifting 4th into 5th it'll rev extra, kind of like the system thinks it's going to be downshifting into 3rd. Sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't.

It just seems like sometimes even when I'm consciously making a neat shift into 5th, 3rd will be activated and it'll rev up. Does this happen to anyone else? I don't notice it on the 2-3 shift even if I "try" to trigger the gate for 1st. So is 3rd gear just overly sensitive in this car with synchro rev on? Or could it just be driver error even though I "think" I'm shifting properly. Or could there be a problem with the car? There is no malfunction light for the synchro rev match system. I'm no amateur to manual driving - oh yea, it's fine with SRM off and I've kind of been enjoying heel and toeing myself.

Happens to me sometimes too, but usually only if I leave it between gears for an extra second or don't get a clean transition into the next slot. It's also saved my bacon once or twice when I fu^ked up and almost went into the wrong gear. Neat feature overall IMO.

If pushing the stick "straight" from 4th to 5th (ride against the side of the gate) doesn't work, it may need some adjustment. Download the FSM. It describes how the system is supposed to work, has diagnostic procedures, diagrams, adjustments, &c.

problem with having 3 MT cars the gate entry angles are all different so once in a blue moon i mess up the gate entry and wake myself up.

NismoNY 02-08-2015 06:54 AM

Interesting

So I take it that its "normal" then. I guess it couldn't hurt to check the adjustment of the shifter as well but the car has low miles and I doubt it's already out of whack.

The way I found this out was I was having some fun on the highway and quick shifted into 5th at around 4.5k and it revved up a good bit. I thought it was odd so I've been conscious about it ever since. But it doesn't really happen under normal rpm for everyday driving, like 3 rpm

This guy have the same issue in this thread and its another 2014 Nismo.

Did you install an aftermarket stereo? If so, check to make sure that everything is connected properly and nothing is chopped-up. If not, scan for codes or just take it in to the dealer and show them what it is doing.

NismoNY 02-08-2015 09:52 AM

Hey guys, no aftermarket stereo, though I am looking at a Pioneer.

On my way to gym today it didn't happen once and I was really neat with the shifts above 4k. I guess its just characteristic of the car. Appreciate the replies.

kenchan 02-08-2015 01:16 PM

yah, clean gate entry is all that it's needed.

GL on the pioneer HU. i luv mine.

NismoNY 02-08-2015 09:41 PM

Yea I think that's all that's needed...clear gate entry, though I do think some cars might more sensitive than others

scope22 02-09-2015 08:15 AM

i spoke with dealer about this and they said that its normal, sync rev match is for up and down shifts

Oh, I knew that - this isn't about that though.

I was talking about why 3rd gear seems to more sensitive in regards to synchro rev match when upshifting from 4th to 5th. Seems sometimes even when I think I'm doing a clean shift, it'll rev up as if it was detecting 3rd gear. But, for now, I'm going to chalk it up to driver error b/c it hasn't happened the past few days and I've been making very conscious shifts from 4th - 5th. I will say though that I've never given something this much though compared to my previous manual cars, but then again, those didn't have SRM and this might just be how SRM is... very sensitive.

Mine does that on occasion from 4th to 5th and pegs the **** out of the redline cuz rev synch "thinks" I wanna go down to 3rd. Doesn't happens often but as kenchen posted it really wakes u up.

Magic Bus 02-09-2015 02:49 PM

Happens to me occasionally on my 3rd to 4th shifts. Usually happens when I lazily shift below 3k.

FPenvy 02-09-2015 02:53 PM

my 7AT gets the rev blip sometimes when going 4th to 5th. typically only when going full throttle it'll do it.

3rd to 4th?

That's such a simple shift, I don't know how anything could happen with that.

I strongly believe the issue is NOT taking a long time to shift while the clutch is in, but rather just overall hand and shifter movement. B/c I've purposely taken longer than usual for my 4-5 and that itself never caused it to blip.

Magic Bus 02-09-2015 03:01 PM

NY, Exactly, it's a simple shift but my Z does occasionally rev. If I shift above 3k, it doesn't happen. Also I never noticed it happening to me on 4th to 5th.

csnow 02-09-2015 03:40 PM

sensitive from 4th to 5th if shifting slow in mine. i hardly ever turn it on though

Yeah it's only when I'm going ham does it ever happen :shakes head: I'm surprised u get this kind of issue being a 7at

yea not sure why but theres a small RPM jump sometimes when i'm going balls out in 4th and shift into 5th.

I don't think it's doing any damage i'm just used to it now.

Interesting to see this thread. I've actually been having the same issues and made a thread about it. Definitely think 3rd gear is too sensitive when shifting from 4th to 5th. I think I'm getting better at it though

You can adjust it!?!? :excited: I need to download this FSM you speak of and take a peak. +1

NismoNY 02-10-2015 05:57 AM

Hmm never thought about an adjustment. But if the gear shifter needed adjustment wouldn't all the other gears be off too?

SouthArk370Z 02-10-2015 07:26 AM

I only glanced through that section (I had the 7AT), but, IIRC, you can adjust the position sensor. My memory has been wrong before. FSM is always a good read for those who are curious about how the 370Z works.
