Default Nissan front fascia shipping problems

My 40th AE is in a highly rated Dallas body shop for some minor stuff including front fascia replacement. I'm sticking with the stock version to keep it original. They rejected the first 4 they got from the Nissan parts warehouse because of dings and minor damage in shipping. They told me that this is not really that unusual for Nissan because of the way they are packed for shipping from the west coast warehouse. In fact, he told me that they had a GTR in for work and had to reject 5 (@ $1500/ea) before they got one w/o damage.

I really doubt that Nissan is eating these costs, and I suspect they are just recycling them hoping that shops are not paying close enough attention to notice. If anyone has similar experience please post, and if you are getting yours replaced, I recommend you make sure your shop inspects carefully before accepting.

Another point he made is that these covers need to be prepped before painting because they have mold release residues which will cause problems after painting. They scrub them down and then bake to vaporize the residues.

How dumb/lazy is your shop?

I honestly don't think your shop is great, I really think they're lazy as all hell...

A bumper with minor blemishes can be fixed 10 different ways. Why aren't they fixing it and throwing it on?

Pretty much in agreement here

As for the defective bumpers? The parts warehouse will eventually get dinged by the manufacturer in this case NISSAN and demand that those issue get fixed by either better packing the parts from the distribution warehouse or fire the minimum wage dope whose job it is to inspect the bumper before they accept from the manufacturer and to properly pack them to be shipped to the customer.

I should know I was that dope when I was just a kid at Volvo :|

Thanks for pointing out your ignorance when it comes to quality (speaking as a 40+ yr Quality Professional). Yes, defects can always be reworked, and yes most of this results in other problems. The point of replacing this is to be able to apply paint protection film which is great when it's done on unblemished surface, but highlights defects when not.

Thanks for making it personal for no god damn reason.

There's gotta be a reason somehow almost no one else's shop has this problem, and I'm sure others have put clear bra on their paint after without issues too. MOST result in other problems... Ehhhh, I think not.

Also, you're in DFW, why not you know... Go to Courtesy Nissan and see if they'll order one for you to THEIR dealership and you can QC it yourself at the dealer.

So the point of this post was to see if anyone else has had similar experience and to forewarn others - not to debate the merits of using damaged goods.

Facts are, my shop has not had this problem with other manufacturers. Also, after 2nd rejection, they asked the unnamed local dealer to unwrap and inspect the next ones before sending over, and they confirmed the problem. They finally got an unblemished to the shop one on the 5th try. Consequently, they did not require my involvement to resolve. Personally, I give points to my shop for this rather "fixing and throwing on".

End of discussion from my side.

Thank god for that

You should try to total out the car every time you need work done to it, after being in QC/QA for 40+ years, nothing but from the factory should be good enough for you.

Is it over

Any quality shop should be able to repair minor bumper damage without you ever knowing. If done right, it will be as good or better than a perfect bumper from the factory. The levels of inefficiency in returning four bumpers is just mind boggling. Imagine someone having to wait weeks for this bs to get sorted out, and all the while they're paying for a rental car.

If a body shop can't fix minor dings on a bumper, find a new body shop.

Chuck, you've shown your ignorance with this statement... SMDH...

For God himself nothing but perfect is acceptable

On another note, I wonder how this shop deals with a bent 1/4 panel? Do they just say it's totaled?
