Fast Intentions on NISMO

Hey guys,

Just installed F.I. on my NISMO. I have a question here: Does your cabin vibrates when you are accelerating?

I have 12''+ Non-res HFC. The drone from below 3.5k rpm is killing the car. The whole cabin vibrates and I can hear the shaking, especially the rear wing section was really singing with the exhaust. I can live with the hiss and the loudness, but the shaking+metal clunks makes me feel a little uncomfortable.

Don't get me wrong, this is a very good sound system. I feel like I'm sitting on a night club's stereo. My rear resonates on the seat with my car's rear.
Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

update: not vibration, buzzing.

Sounds like my honduh civic back in highschool with its muffler removed. Fun times!

Some dynamat in the hatch will go a long way. Also, keep in mind that the exhaust will tame down a little after the first few 100 miles. Not sure how much you have driven it at this point.

I have a little trunk rattle but not much at all.. it changes with the weather too. more rattle in the cold weather.

Chuck33079 02-24-2014 06:10 PM

If you're hearing clunking and metal-on-metal noises, you need to crawl up under there and see where it's rubbing on either the chassis braces or the evap shield.

Rangerz 02-24-2014 06:40 PM

I have the same setup as you and got the rattle in the back as well. I pulled the rear hatch plastic and put some one sided foam weather stripping around the perimeter and where the plastic has the step about half way up. The foam I used was 1/4 inch stuff I got from lowes and that did the trick. Once you get 750 to 1000 miles you will notice it mellow a little.

Thanks. I've been trying to figure out how to describe the noise. I think the word is "Buzz". The rear really buzzes starts 1.8k rpm up to 3-3.5k.

I don't know why this word didn't come across my mind sooner.:owned:

Hotrodz 02-24-2014 09:44 PM

Yup, mine does buzz a little, but if I don't wont to hear it, I just mash the gas....it goes away!

I like to use the KISS method whenever possible, but I'm always torn between my tunes and the awesome sound of my engine and exhaust!

For me it is 98% exhaust. If I had 2 badass leafblowers like you it would b 100%

I installed FI test pipes and exhaust. Don't have the vibration problem, but the HISS is driving me crazy.

I love the power gains way too much to give it up

Chuck33079 02-25-2014 10:14 AM

There shouldn't be any vibration. Something is touching the exhaust. You may need to put a few washers on the exhaust hangers to space it down.

I thought you were going "washer mod" here for a sec... :ugh:

OhOhOh123456 here is the video o me taking the bottom portion off and what I did to get rid of the buzz.

Sorry for the crappy lighting.

Very Nice... +1

H2O_Doc 02-25-2014 10:00 PM

I use dynamat like products for large surfaces, but the utility of it diminishes with the surface area. For my hatch, I used felt tape where plastic panels met other plastic panels or touched metal. Zero rattles, cheap, and much easier to apply than dynamat.

This is simply fantastic. I really didn't expect such a detailed video. I will definitely try it out. Thank you very very very much.

Slam128 02-25-2014 11:18 PM

Could it be an exhaust leak or maybe your exhaust pipe is rubbing up against the under carriage?

I don't think so. I think it sounded more like buzzing and always came in under the drone rpm (1.7/8k-3.0/5k) range.

Hotrodz 02-26-2014 08:43 AM

I would also retighten all the nuts and bolts on the exhaust. I had one bolt come totally undone and after tightening everything up, the only real noise is from light weight flywheel.

Gonna try Rangerz's method first cuz I don't have jack stand (i feel unsafe to crawl under the car on my own..). If it doesn't solve, I may go back to the installer and figure out where the buzz come from.

Is that the odd noise that goes away when I push the clutch in? If so, it's the noisiest single aspect of any car I've ever had, not counting things that are supposed to be noisy (engine/exhaust sounds).

I think this noise comes stock. Just get a loud exhaust setup. I always notice it before, now I simply can't hear it anymore.

critical 02-26-2014 03:29 PM

mine vibrates on cold start. i have a little "dynomat" too. i wouldn't say i have any drone driving on the highway though. maybe if the rpms were at 2k..

Hotrodz 02-26-2014 10:04 PM

Yup, it will rattle at very low RPMs when in first or second gear and you are at a slow roll....

Rangerz 02-27-2014 06:06 PM

Hey oH,

When I did that vid I think knocked off the foam where the bottom plastic connects to the upper portion. For me the major source of the BUZZ. I re did mine at that connection and it's gone. H2O doc said he used felt I think that would work well too for that joint.

let us know if that hooks you up.:tiphat:

ohohoh123456 02-27-2014 08:03 PM

So....first of all thanks guys for all of your inputs. I'm back with my results

Special thanks to RangerZ. But unfortunately it didn't solve the problem.

So I took that piece of panel off and tried, still had buzz.

Then I took all the panels off hatch door (the piece I foamed up and the u-shape pieces behind it). The buzz was still there.

So now I'm stuck clueless. Anymore inputs? I did nail the rpm range to >1.8k and <2.3k

Video coming right up~

ohohoh123456 02-27-2014 08:12 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVBN1Qjc29I

Here comes the sound clip. By the way I didn't try to control the rpm in this video. If I control it to be in the "buzzing" zone, it can and will buzz all day long. Gets even louder after pipes are warmed

Rangerz 02-27-2014 09:27 PM

Yea thats not what my rattle sounded like. It almost sounds like the lisence plate. All the tools are nice and tight? Cubby behind passenger seat empty etc... sorry man. Can you get somebody to ride along with you at the buzz rpm and push on different panels, parts etc to narrow it down. Just guessing here
