burning smell.
i dont hardly ever race my car.. i dont floor it from a dead stop. maybe once in a blue moon. but today i did. had a guy on a motorcycle want to mess around and thought it would be fun. i forgot to turn off traction control only cause i rarely do these things. i gave it some good rpm's and tried to take off. i started rolling but not going anywhere and the rpm's maxed out a couple times.
It was as if the clutch just gave up. first thing i checked was traction control,, that light was not coming on, only the REV light. i waited until the car calmed down and the rpm.s dropped until i tried to give it normal gas and drive away. The car drives fine, but now i smell a burning smell from the engine.. anyone got a clue as to what that could be? Every time i drive it now i get that smell. thank you |

You already said it in your post. You burnt your clutch. The smell will go away, just takes a little time. Hopefully it wasn't too severe, where it will cause engagement issues (flat spot) and eventually cause the clutch to pop.

I could always be wrong but I'm 93% sure, just like my octane ha...
With all due respect, don't rule out the possibility of driver error. You don't typically beat on the car, so with your adrenaline pumping you may have made a mistake. Also, don't mess with bikes, #1 they have no protective shell around them if you or they screw up, and #2 you stand no chance against even a 600cc bike.

had same thing happened to me, one day i was trying to show off by doing a little burn out and clutch wouldn't come up fully. same burning smell for awhile and now its gone but it also feels like my clutch was broken in because the engaging got lot smoother.

I seriously doubt the clutch was fried from one bad launch. I'd have waited a little longer to buy a replacement unless it was slipping. Did you ever floor it in 5th gear and see if the clutch was slipping? The smell takes a while to go away, usually not in two days.

I think its embarrassing for something like that to happen. If I want to launch the thing should launch. Either way, Joe said this will last longer and is a much better clutch all the way around. I have already had the master cylinder fail on me too. The clutch feels different to me, maybe I am thinking about it too much but it just doesnt have that instant grab feel it used too. this is what I ordered. Stage 2 CLutch |

You jumped the gun buying a new clutch. You launched it badly once. It's not on the way out. There's nothing wrong with the oem clutch as far as launching it. One launch where you spun it and smelled it for two days in no way necessitates buying a new clutch. Take a look at the disc that comes out if you go forward with the replacement. I'll bet it's still got plenty of meat on it.

I have the same clutch and flywheel setup with upgraded Csc. It's so much smoother than stock, revs up a ton faster, and 1st gear takeoff is super easy. Granted my Z isn't a DD, but this setup can definitely be. A tad bit more chatter while stopped in neutral, but that is expected with a lightweight FW.

HAHA, you guys are funny.. No, that was not me.. I realized right away something was wrong and stopped giving it gas.
If I jumped the gun, its ok.. I have money. Give me a couple weeks to get it all set up and I will let you all know how it works out. |
