2010 Nismo - Engine Oil Question

Hello Fellow Z members,

I have a quick question regarding engine oil. I have the maintenance plan for my Nismo Z and dealership says I need synthetic blend only for the Nismo. Is that correct? I have to pay $30 more to put in the full synthetic on top of what I have paid for in the maintenance plan. What do you guys suggest? I have only changed my oil twice. Car is currently at 6100 miles. With the plan, I can change my oil every 5k miles or 3 months, but it'll be with the blend.

Question - Should I be putting full synthetic in every time?

McNeil370 07-24-2011 07:35 AM

if u can then do it. these cars brake down oil very fast, i change mine every 4000 km and its allways black as s*@t

roplusbee 07-24-2011 07:54 AM

Funny you should ask.....

I used Mobil 1 full synthetic for all but 2 oil changes. The first one was done at the dealer and they used the Ester oil. It was kinda horrible. Black as tar at the next oil change. I then switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic for all except the last one. Somehow the dealer used Valvoline non synthetic on my oil change. It sucked bad also. the car was not as responsive and oil temp increased overall compared to what I was used to seeing during "spirited driving".

If you are a spirited driver, I suggest you use a full synthetic. If not, the NISSAN Ester oil or a blend will work out for you.

I am about to change mine with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 Full synthetic and a Wix 51358 filter.

Mobil 1, full syn all the way with my last 5 cars. It's a must for the 370 with the oil temp issues.

That's exactly what I just put in my car Thursday. Extended Performance. 6 quarts for a little over $30 at Walmart, win.

From experience I have always used mobile 1 full synthetic in my trucks but like I was a rookie in sports cars I ask in the forum ChicagoZ.com. They recommended full synthetic 5-w30 performance AMS oil good for our vq engines with k&n oil filter. Now that's just what everyone recommended and I do it myself since the first oil change is been working fine for me so I recommended, now I have 8000 miles on the car and about to change it again I do it every 3000 miles.

Synack 07-24-2011 09:23 PM

I wait at least 5000 miles. 3000 miles is for 1980's cars... lol

MickLee 07-24-2011 09:36 PM

Thanks for all the responses! I will buy the oil (Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 Full Synthetic) and have the dealer change it. I was debating if it really makes a difference, but it's best for the car anyway. Don't want any issues down the line.

Yeah that's what my dad says but I got so used to it that when I see the miles pass the 3k It bothers the he'll out of me don't know why so that's why I change it but will keep it in mind lol

Synack 07-24-2011 10:20 PM

You could always buy your oil of choice and filter and have any shop change the oil for you. The dealer always charges more.

MickLee 07-24-2011 11:09 PM

What is your guy's oil temperature normally at? Without the synthetic oil thus far, Mine is around 190 to 200ish..

chops 07-25-2011 12:00 AM

you guys should read the g37 forums. theres a HUGE thread on oil analysis done there with hundreds of different results. i believe mobil1's fully synth doesnt fare too well with our engines....hence why i strayed away this time. im using pennzoil ultra fully synth since i saw nothing but good things on the oil analysis done on this particular oil. $27 for a 5 quart jug at walmart too!

the engineers who designed our engines recommend ester oil.......

i guess everyone else just knows better than they do.

Cell 07-25-2011 12:44 PM

I went from the original oil that came with the car to mobile 1 full synthetic. I notice that car feels better and the oil temps are about 10-15 degrees lower in the same conditions.

you cannot take the opperating temps during break-in as accurate numbers. ive used ester every change. im at 23k miles now. my temps consistantly get lower, as in i havnt seen the 240degrees i did when i got it. even in the texas heat down here i feel each oil change the motor feels better and better.

they say you can use full synth but it wont adhear to the diamond polished heads we have...... seems pretty important to keep them as cool as possible on an engine that is hot already.

fuct 07-25-2011 04:34 PM

..... im now having doubts about my special ester oil.... hmmmmm

damn you oil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

FL 4Motion 07-25-2011 04:52 PM

lotta oil threads again lately it seems.

Anyway, I broke the car in on what it came w/from the factory. At 1500 miles changed to Nissan's ester oil. At 5K, installed oil cooler and changed to Mobile1 0w-40 w/mobile1 oil filter.

If you change your oil every 3K or so, then it's not as big a deal to run dino oil (which is fine for the Nismo, or any Z for that matter). If you track the car/and or want to run longer service intervals, then use a good synthetic.

Or maybe the engineers only ran Ester in the VQ? Possible. People are just putting down what oils they have and what temps they get. A better source of info would be for these people to put their oil brand, temp, and how they drive. Because with the way I drive the oil gets to 240-245 in TX very easily. But I can drive normal and it'll stick at 220. And it's also been all the way up to 270. Too many variables and not enough info lol.

:iagree: Just finished reading the entire thread. Im running redline now but will probably be hitting up the Pennzoil Ultra on the next go round. I did previously run mobil 1 and the temps where down but the oil consumption was alot higher though.

roplusbee 07-26-2011 04:57 AM

Well, my NISMO wsa stock engine-wise before I left. Civilized driving TX heat, would net between 215-220 oil temp in stop and go traffic. Spirited driving would net anywhere from 240 or higher, depending on how long I pushed it. I would usually back off once I noticed the was over 230. That was all with Mobil 1 5W30. I had no issues with oil consumption though, but I guess I should track it myself instead of the dealer.

Once my TTs are installed and I get the car back, she will get 10W40 for a little better oil breakdown resistance. I am still debating the Setrab 34 Row or the massive AE Performance cooler though.

Any kind of oil cooler is a must in Texas during the Summer if you are a spirited driver like me. My temps are almost always around 240 and getting even more spirited on the highway I've seen upwards of 260-270. I just hate seeing it go that high which is why I'm going to buy a bang for the buck oil cooler.

Can someone please post this G37 forum link?
