Was driving home tonight and I heard a weird noise, then my oil light came on and the car almost lost control. I quickly came to a stop and huge fumes of smoke started pouring out from the engine bay. I turned the car off and noticed oil everywhere on the road behind me, all over my wheels and all over the engine.. meanwhile oil was still pouring out all over the ground while the car was stopped. Going to have the car towed to the shop I had install it in the morning and figure out what the problem is.

Anyone have an idea what happend? Has anyone else had a problem like this with the Z1 Motorsports Oil cooler or any other oil coolers? Any help here would be great! thanks

I don't know about the smoke, but when I didn't tighten the fittings enough, the oil just started pouring out of the fittings and gushed everywhere all the way behind my radiator. It could be the fact that yours wasn't tight enough maybe? I still don't know what seems to be the issue with smoke and oil light coming on. Oh I did the install with help of a friend.

The smoke was probably from the oil spraying all over a scalding hot motor, and the light would come on if it sensed a HUGE decrease in both oil pressure and amount of oil. Sounds like u ruptured a line/fitting or "hope not" the core.

It wont hurt anything at all as long as the car was NOT run w/o oil and u shut it down right away, it will just be a bitch to clean up lol.

Sorry that I havent been able to update this in a while. Just wanted to let everyone know of how the situation was handled. It turns out that a small pin that held the fitting in place was either missing or came out and because of that it resulted in one of the lines to come off. From what I understand the smoke I was seeing was due to oil getting on the manifold.

Big thanks to Z1 for sending me out a new fitting very quickly, I was able to have the car returned to me right before the Flat Out Motorsports event at Roebling Road last weekend! It was very hot out there, I would say the air temps were around 98, oil temps never got above 230!!

Who would of thunk it? I'll be checking mine from time to time now. And it's not a Z1 though to clarify. Glad it was smooth sailing for you regardless of the oil all over your motor.

Excellent! I am glad to hear you were able to make it to the track. I know of a few others who went to that event as well. Did you see a Blue G37 at the event along with MIKE in the THEPOWDERCOATER.com Blacked out 370Z?

As I mentioned before, this type of failure was extremely odd. As with anything else in life...anything is possible. Those pins are pressed in and what allows for the swivel function of the fitting itself. We have inspected and verified all current lines on the shelf for both the 300zx, 350Z and 370Z oil cooler kits.

Any thoughts on coming up for the Nationals and doing that track event?

Let me dig around this evening on my desktop...I visited the Omori Factory @ NISMO HQ in Japan last year and saw one of the Z Challenge 370Z's prepared by NISMO sitting in the garage. They had equipped the car with the prototype NISMO 370Z Diff Cooler and NISMO 370Z Oil Cooler. The Front fascia was on, but I think I got a few decent pictures of the fender liner and ducting.

Here is a link to the Omori Factory website covering the cooling system upgrades for the 350Z/370Z:

Based on the YEN conversion to USD, that oil cooler kit is actually MUCH MORE expensive than I thought previously. 210,000 YEN ~ $2,200 USD (rough calculation)

ahhhhhh thank you!!!!!!!!!

$6500 for their entire car temperature fix..... interesting. come on you crafty americans, lets see what we can do to copy these items! :P

Yes both the blue G37 and the black 370 were there. Me and the G were in the same run group, pretty even match up.

I also got to take a ride along with the black z, he was in a different run group from me, he is an amazing driver, I think he was pushing low 1:20's in that thing!

As for Nationals I would like to attend but my works schedule for that week looks pretty full, I doubt I will be able make it

damn, wish I had seen this thread a few hours ago. I just finished installing mine... would have checked the couplers.

Oh well, a test drive, road trip and track day in the next 2 weeks should prove it out.

Sorry to hear about the issue - even with an occasional glitch this is still a superior product imo and Z1 has excellent customer service!

Back from the dead but is this really a Nismo oil cooler kit?

370Z Nismo Oil Cooler Kit

False alarm, the part number is the same as the Nissan Motorsports kit. But now I am not sure where they got that picture from.

The buyers should be aware that the Nissan Motorsports Oil Cooler kits (as shown in the FB Nissan images) DO NOT come with the fiberglass ducts as that picture shows. The kit shown is definitly wrong, the kit they have shown is actually for the R32 Skylines. See attached link:

I emailed them about it so I hope they do clear up to prevent future misunderstandings. I did see this kit but I am not sure how many rows it has and if it is sufficient for occasional track use. I like the setup because it does not require the Nismo damper to be flipped.

AAM Competition - Nissan GT-R, 370Z Turbo Performance Specialists

Dustin@Z1 01-14-2012 03:20 PM

The core they use is a Setrab 9 series 13 row. Setrab is the same company that us (Z1), Nissan Motorsports and GTM use in our kits and is widely known and used in both OEM and Racing applications.

There are a few disadvantages to that design if you plan on going Forced Induction in the future.

Flipping the dampner will not affect the performance on the Z in any way. The ONLY downside to doing this, aside from the cost of your time, is the fact that the NISMO/AUTECH label will be upside down. If you are worried about flipping the NISMO dampner, I hope you are aware that the AAM Oil Cooler kit requires you to drill into your factory front aluminum crash bar.

Nikkolai 01-15-2012 03:47 AM

Oh, I was just looking for alternatives. I have had an oil cooler that I installed myself and also needed to flip the damper. I took it off because I am still thinking about selling my car but still not fully committed in doing so. I did not know if there were per-existing holes in the crash bar though so I assumed that it was going to be drilled on.

Wow...this thread is exactly why I will be adding an oil pressure gauge when I add my Z1 oil cooler...
