Interesting fuel door

Was washing my car. Needed to clean around fuel door. It wouldn't open. Kept pushing it. Great, I thought, its broke. As you all know there's no lever just a push button. Thought wth what is making it stick. There's no latches or levers. Then I wondered if I need the key fob for whatever reason. Nope. So just brainstorming I hit the unlock. Wow, the fuel door wont open unless the vehicle is unlocked. I look and don't really see anything. Must be magnetic or something. All along I didn't think it locked and was considering a locking fuel cap...just somethin I noticed and pretty cool.

yep. that is mentioned in the owner's manual.

Most current Nissan's and Infiniti's have the same mechanism. On my 2005 FX, there's a small white plastic tab that extends when you lock your doors. This tab goes through a hole in the gas door that prevents it from being opened. When you unlock the doors, the tab retracts, thus allowing you to press the thing-a-ma-bob that pops the gas door open. In my FX, in case of malfunction there is a small access port in the trunk area (part of the plastic trim) that allows you to reach in, pull on a cable of sorts to disengage this white tab to pop open the gas door. I imagine the 370Z's design is similar and similar access through the interior trim is in place as well.

Yeah it's pretty surprising the first time you figure out how the gas door works.

Prob isn't thread worthy but I kinda tried to pry it open. Good thing its plastic. Thought i'd throw it out there so no one breaks theirs. Lol

The touch less car wash broke mine - leave your car locked when going through!

It's an expensive replacement, I bet.

Sorry to raise this thread from the dead but has anybody had any issues where the car is unlocked and the gas door still wont open?? Had this happen to me today, car was unlocked and I couldn't for the life of me get the fuel door to open. After furiously cursing at it for about 5 min and locking/unlocking the car about 20 times it finally opened like normal. Anybody else had this issue? Is the locking mechanism thingy going bad on my car? What would cause this? First time it has happened in the 3.5 years and 40k miles I've had this car for.

You could try some wd-40 on the lock.

Sounds like its sticking.
