When she agreed (much to my great surprise), I proceeded to the local Nissan dealer and purchased a GTR. This news precipitated WW3 at home. In order to make peace, I compromised by offering to "settle" for a 370Z; wifey agreed. After test driving several competitor vehicles, I tentatively purchased a Base/Sport 6 MT. When, however, the opportunity of purchasing a 3 week old 2009 Nismo with 940 miles for $31K arose, I jumped.
Although I have neither raced nor modified Z cars, and my personal "Z" experience is limited to my present Nismo, I did submit test-drive articles on a regular basis in the 1980's to Porsche Panorama and BMW Roundel magazines comparing competitor cars to Porsches and BMWs. I thought this group would appreciate a similar effort with regard to our Z's.
Permit me to profer advice to those 370Z owners contemplating "mods": ATTEND A DRIVING SCHOOL! Our cars have an enormous performance envelope that most drivers cannot approach. One cannot imagine the improvement in driving skills and capability available by taking even a single, novice driving class.

nice! yeah i too am interested in a comparisson. especially against some of the super cars you have driven.

thank you for your knowledge!

I will be only too happy to compare my seat-time in a Mustang 5.0, Camaro SS, Corvette and Cayman S to our Nismos. For that matter, should anyone wish a comparo between the Nismo and any of my previous cars, just yell.
Every car has its own unique personality, character and "soul", an inherent "goodness" that cannot be measured by a mere number at a drag strip or race course. The 370Z has that "goodness" in spades.
As I am about to leave for Pittsburgh and the Steelers home opener, will return to complete my in-depth response on Tuesday.

thx man, have fun at the game.

Have fun at the home opener, your review deserves to be in it's own thread.

I say go for the Nismo. I was cross shopping between a STI and a Nismo and chose the 370. They're both bad *** but the Nismo has better looks by far!!!!

Hey... I was looking forward to reading your comments!! Don't leave us hanging!

The nismo might not be the fastest or the strongest, but hell it looks sexy as hell. GTM that thing and its alright for the money. I love my nismo, only because its unique. I see so many camaros and stangs, but only one 370z.

johnnieg 10-16-2010 08:06 AM

Ill say this i have owned some nice cars over the years also from caddies to mini coopers and 1 z car . When i first seen the nismo i couldn't believe the way it looked i thought it was a 911!

So when i retired from my job i wanted to buy a gift for myself i had 2 choices a grand sport vett or the nismo. After owning a vett back in 2005 i had to think twice ,hey dont get me wrong the vett looked awesome but what a peace of crap! The new grand sport had bumped up hp nice zr1 looks but my previous vett left a bad bad taste i my mouth. I found a 09 #290 for with 171miles on it 32500 end of story! I will have it in a few weeks never drove one but who cares its a nismo!!!! Go for the zcar

JDW1479 10-16-2010 09:51 AM

Second question....what would you buy and your pros and cons
1) NISMO (2011) est 40k
2) BMW 1-Series "M" (2012) est 45k+
3) EVO MR (2011) est 40k
4) Camaro 2SS (2011) est 35-40k

1. So far so great, I have yet to have a problem with mine for the whole 1500 miles I have on it. It is a rougher ride than my previous EVO X MR on Eibachs.

2. I would never own a BMW, once those things go out of warranty, its hard to afford the $200+ an hour rate for the technicians at a dealership. But of course you could always buy an extended warranty. Plus, everyone has a BMW here in Dallas.

3. My old EVO MR was a badass car. 4 doors is a huge bonus compared to the Z. You can spend far less money modding an EVO than a Z and make way more power. The car handled on rails. And with the dual clutch tranny, it was a beast. Also, you hardly ever see an EVO here in Dallas except when the EVO club meets up.

4. Its a big engine in a peice of plastic. Guarantee, in two years, the car would be rattling worse than an A.D.D. kid playing maracas. Plus the car weights 4000lbs, handles like a peice of crap. And most importantly, in two years, everybody is gonna have one. Just like the Mustang.

LuckyJinx 10-16-2010 07:41 PM

I got the nismo because everyone has a camaro And a mustang. Not many people have the 370z, but no one had the nismo.

Exactly why I got it!

n1cd 10-17-2010 04:38 PM

They talk the truth. Dealer has only sold one here and well she got it. Everyone looks at it on the road. I like to think its me they look at but it all her and the black nismo god. Together there HOOOOOT

:worship:

Waiz 10-17-2010 07:21 PM

The Nismo is a great option because it arrives already modded from the factory.

And on top of that still be able to clear a parking block with the front end. I refuse to go for aftermarket body kits because they all sit too low on the front making driving in the "real world" a "real pain in the ***".

pokeyl 11-19-2010 08:32 PM

Just order my red one today, the ride is not as bad as my 1984 Z-51 vette.

Nismoracer 11-21-2010 01:14 AM

Is the Nismo worth it? Definitely! Some may like it some may not. But as far as is it worth yet... Yes. I too have had many cars along the way and its just what you prefer to have. The Nismo is rare and its a great looking car. You definitely have to see one in person, looks even better than in photos. I'm sure everyone has read about the specs and reviews but you just have to go see one in person and drive it. I have had a vette which out of the box is great on performance but doesn't seem to handle like the nismo. Not saying its better or worse just not the same and I like the way the nismo handles. Yes the nismo could use a bit more power, 18 hp more than stock? Not really impressive, it should have at least 50 more hp or an even 400hp out of the box but this car is great, luv it. Traded in a challenger r/t for it. The challenger is a great car lots of pluses w the new crop but it just didn't keep me excited as the nismo does when driving. To each his own but the Nismo is definitely worth it. Oh and ppl who think you over paid for a body kit, like the guy said above its not the same as when it comes from the factory.

BennytheBlade 11-21-2010 07:42 PM

Nismo is worth it if you are not planning on buying a lot of aftermarket parts/aero and doing a ton of mods. If you are a modder, I would pass on the Niz. I love the aero package, love the OEM Rays wheels, and the exhaust is great w/ berk hfcs.

F1loco 11-21-2010 08:11 PM

Well, today I was headed home and decided I'd take some "SS"s by my house...it had been a light drizzle, traction control was on...dash light was flashing like mad, but never once felt out or control...Yes, it would could have a turbo and more torque, but the balance reminds me of Alfa and it's not all just about power, but balance of the car...it makes you smile... :D

Carbon_z 11-26-2010 12:51 AM

to be honest... I bought my base with flaps, mats, other charges and stuff for 28,500 NEW. The difference of the 12grand can be used for GTM turbo kit OR a well built NA motor with BETTER suspension and BETTER brakes then the nismo. Get some 4-6 piston brake brake with some springs and exhaust system with headers and thats STILL less the nismo with BETTER parts. Just my .02 But the overall of the 370z is amazing. My prior 350z did so well that I decided to break my rule of duplicating the same make and model. Nismo looks Cool but for 12K EXTRA what do you expect. Hell you can spend 4k and get an amuse kit. And then buy a used Nismo exhaust and ur done lol. Same motor as base and power.... just slightly tuned different and you can fix that for about 500 bucks and tune it to your likings

Nismoracer 11-26-2010 04:25 PM

True. But all those aftermarket goodies are not going to hold their value much when you go to sell it or trade it. Dealerships don't care what you put on it. They may give you a little here and there but in the end unless the entire car is completely custom it won't be worth as much as a NISMO. And its got a factory warranty........ Doing those mods on a base is going to void your warranty. As far as the different body kits........Good luck finding someone who can match and paint and install perfectly without problems.

Carbon_z 11-26-2010 09:04 PM

look how much a used Nismo goes for and compare it to how much a used 370 base goes for. Now compare both of them new.... Nismo used is a higher than a base 370 but by a grand. Talk about reducing the price range. New is about 12 K difference, used...about 5-7

Nismo
Cons: No leather or Nav but not really expected.
Pros: It's a bloody Nismo and looks awesome. More rare than typical GT Mustang.
BWM 1 series
Cons: It's a BMW, a small one at that. It looks terrible.
Pros: It's a BMW, so its sort of nice.
EVO MR
Cons: Two too many doors. Not really a looker. Gets very pricey if you start stacking on the options. No manual.
Pros: AWD turbo :)
Camaro 2SS
Cons: No Nav option. Gauge cluster looks... funky. Pretty common now and hard to tell V6s from V8s.
Pros: Looks awesome. V8. Decent factory options [except nav]

my 2 cents

I don't think it is a 12k difference brand new.... it is more like 9k difference when you are comparing the two invoices. If you add the sports package to the base, it would be about a 5-6k difference? Most people that buy the 370z buy it with the sports package.

Assuming you are comparing the nismo to the base then with 9k more you get new rims, tires, exterior mods, suspension upgrades.

High quality aftermarket rims already goes for a good chunk of the 9k difference.

Fit and finish will never be as good as factory if you go aftermarket with exterior mods.

Honestly though, Nismo is worth it if you are planning to never mod the exterior.

i was going through the same struggle when i was buying my nismo..however going by your figures, i ended up only paying ~6k more than your base for a new nismo with 10miles on the clock. there are a TON of nismo's sitting on the lots here and no one wants to buy them. was very easy to haggle

problem with buying a base+sports and upgrading from there...i would probably never get around to it. i dont mind paying a little more for having a factory fit and finish. if i went with an aftermarket front/rear bumper it would cost 4-5k to obtain the bumpers and have them painted to my expectations. an exhaust would be another 1500 or so which puts me at the same price as a nismo already. im actually a huge fan of the nismo suspension as well...and in order to get something that stiff id have to throw in another 1-2k for coilovers, or 500-1000 for some take off nismo suspension. add in some decent 19's and thats another 4-5k.

it was a no brainer to go with the nismo for me

but calculate the additional sales tax. Based on percentage, the amount being higher means higher sales tax. I think I was out of the door at 32,020. How much is a nismo out the door? The nismo is beautiful and i dont want want to become the anti-nismo chris angel guy lol just saying.. But seriously, if u plan on keeping the car nismo style and all..then nismo. If you plan on getting a nismo and then changing everything NOT WORTH IT.

Carbon_z 11-26-2010 11:38 PM

btw I REFUSED and I mean REFUSED to test drive a nismo..... LOL I know exactly what would have happened. I wouldnt be fixing up a base ;)

difference in taxes wouldnt have been too much in california. ~2500 vs ~3500...we get raped on taxes and registration regardless here.

i definitely agree though..if you plan on changing alot of the car, its a much better idea to just get a base+sport. however, i dont regret my purchase one bit! im also not a fan of leather at all, so touring was automatically crossed off the list!

No idea what Chop got it for but I got it for 41200 OTD. We have a sales tax of about 10.25% in chicago.

Carbon_z 11-27-2010 09:58 AM

not bad.. around 9k-10k additional then i paid. That tax is ridiculous

Carbon_z 11-27-2010 10:05 AM

i think the right thing to really say in this entire topic is.... A 370z is differently the way to go. So the hard part should be which package.

Yea i know. On top of that the street meters in chicago are privately owned now and the cost to park a car in the street has shot up 5 times. One quarter used to give us an hour, now it is 2.50 for two hours.

Carbon_z 11-27-2010 10:10 AM

mini york is what Chicago is becoming.
