Default Road Noise 370z nismo

Hi all, I have always loved the nismo look and now going to finally make the move, today I took my first test drive and noticed one huge factor, road noise!. I am going to test out 2 more this week and I am wondering if I can get some feedback on all your experiences, being nismo owners, on road noise. Is this normal to have a lot or was this a bad egg? I am looking at the 2012's, is this an issue that others have and how did you deal with it or do you just turn the music up....
thanks

It's normal for our cars to have a lot of road noise. Purchase some dynamat and do the doors and trunk. It should help a lot. There's a DIY section here that shows you how to do it.

Dynamat works, but the road noise will go from shít to crap.

I'm going to have the entire rear of the car Line-X'd next...

Welcome to the 370Z forum. It is a sport car not a luxury car.

It's a noisy car, no question. Not a lot of sound deadening, often true of a performance sports car, especially one you can buy for $35K. Also, your head is sitting about 24 inches from your left rear wheel. You can make it better with Dynamat or similar, but the stuff is heavy, expensive, and only marginally effective. I found that the most impact on road noise was made by appropriate tire selection.

OEM tires are pretty damn noisy

But even with quieter tires, it's not going to be that quiet. It's a sports car, not a luxury coupe

Also, FWIW, dynamat and similar products are purely for vibration dampening. For real noise dampening, you need a closed cell foam product.

This is normal. I have owned both kinds of the nismo's 2011 and 2016. With the new wheel well liners on the 2015 & 16, the noise is less but not by much.

depends on the asphalt or concrete aggregate, some roads are noisy others are quiet,,we have some freeways that are concrete and they take diamond big machines and plane all the grooves out, almost quiet but it is a noisy car.

Welcome! Noise or not, you will love the car so much during the first few weeks or ownership that you won't be bothered (much) by the road noise. A few things to note:

- Transmission whine is intense when the car is new, but this diminishes within a week.
- The most road/tire noise appears to come from the rear wheel-wells, which are a mere ~2 feet from your head.

This week, I decided to DIY some insulation in the interior of the hatch, and I ran it up over the wheel wheels, and even up the back wall of where the hatch meets the trunk.

I used (don't flame me) industrial black rubber underlay that's used underneath laminate flooring - specifically designed to reduce noise between floors. I fixed it in place using Gorilla Tape, and sparing amounts of rubber (contact) cement. Easy to remove should I need to later.

The results were surprisingly good. All of the higher frequencies while driving have been decreased substantially, and only the lowest bassy-rumbles of the exhaust make it into the cabin. In fact, I notice much more sound comes from the front of the vehicle after this DIY test.

It's not Acura TL quiet; the car will always be a little loud inside. But the harsher sounds, the ones that interfere in the frequency range of speech, are pleasantly attenuated.

That's right: "better-half friendly" stuff!

A little elbow grease, and some half-decent sound-deadener will go a long way.

Then, new tires.

Enjoy your Z!

I don't think it's that bad honestly. My girl is getting a new car in January for her birthday so I guess we'll be shocked by the quietness of whatever she's getting. She has a Cobalt currently.
