Hello, Im new!!
Hello!!
My name is Will. I am 24, and I live in New York-Westchester County (20min above the city). I just got my new '10 black 370Z Sport 6M last Saturday. Very happy about it. I haven't had a chance to nearly beast mine yet since I'm trying to break it in, certainly requires a lot of patience... Though I did get to beast the dealer test car a little bit since I had to be convinced, and without getting too detailed, the first impression was good, better than 135i IMO. Couple things I wanted to ask you guys though: My engine, trans, and clutch feel a little rough and loud. For example, the trans gears sound sort of like straight-cut gears. (I mean, not THAT much. Just a little bit, and not as much whining sound as the reverse.) I was just wondering if this is normal for a 370Z, as it might be like a "raw" character this car may have. If so, I like it, a lot. I just wanted to double check and make sure, and stay away from ignorantly destroying a potentially defective car. (My car before this was a Toyota Matrix for 6 years, haha.) Next, during pick-up last Sat, I noticed a couple of scrapes and chips on the trunk hatch and the spoiler. Not that big, but noticeable from a couple yards away (especially since it's black). I talked to the manager and have scheduled a re-paint of the hatch for free. Now, do I want to do this? As much as I want an impeccably clean paint and finish on the car, I do NOT want some body shop to do a half-a** job and have the color not match perfectly, or put a little less layers of paint and/or clear coats to be able to tell the difference. Or potentially in the long run, the paint might crack or peel, or maybe even when I sell it down the road, someone'll inspect it and say the hatch has been repainted and the resale value goes down... I donno, maybe I'm being a little too anal, but I'm almost feeling it might be better off just touching it up and leaving the orig factory paint. Would this lead to potential potential rust spots? Should I ask the manager for some money back? Overall, I'm very excited to start my "journey" with this fantastic car. I'm probably gonna ask a lot of questions in the future for everyone's expertise knowledge as this will be a very valuable learning experience for me, so please bear with me I really appreciate it, and it's truly my privilege to join you guys on the forum and the Z community!!!! |

Welcome and Congrats on the car man. First off, the Noise. I have come to learn that Nissan's engines and transmissions are very noisy. The engine sounding noisy or rough has been a complaint from alot of the testers but its normal. Nothing a CAI and CBE cant fix LOL. As for the whine I hear it in 1st sometimes, its normal and just the sound of the tranny. The Z is a bad a** car that makes alot of weird noise, have you heard the rattle from the tranny that sounds like your through out bearing is shot?? its all normal. The people who complain about it should have forked out the extra 10k and bought a G37. As for your paint issue I would have them repaint it. If it still looks like crap contact Nissan North American and complain some more. Good luck man.
P.S maybe Ill see you at a meet or two being a fellow New Yorker.

I personally would not be happy with the chipping, especially as noticeable as that is on a black car that is brand new. Anyway you can see some cars the dealer has repainted to see their quality of work? Maybe ask if they have done paint work on other Z's? Just my .02 cents.

Welcome and Congrats!
The transmission noise is normal and has been discussed extensively. Just do a search and you will find all the information your looking for. Rust will only happen when nothing is protecting the metal, so unless its more of a chip than a scratch, you don't have to worry. The paint doesn't look all that bad and doesn't need a re-paint just by looking at the pictures. First I would try having it professionally polished, not the dealer. It doesn't look like it went below the clearcoat, so a fine cut polish could possibly remove it. Hand polishing might not be enough, so have a pro use a machine polisher. You could also ask the dealer to offset the cost. The detailer at most dealerships aren't exactly the most skilled in detailing, so I would try and stay away from having them do this. If you take a picture of the paint with a camera (flash on) or look at the paint in direct sunlight, I guarantee there are swirls from the first detail when you picked up the car from the dealer. Also, our paint is on the soft side so make sure you take any bird droppings, tree sap, etc. from the paint right away, especially since your car is Black. Otherwise, you will see marks from the "acid" start to eat away at the clearcoat. It can be removed, but only with polishing, so never let it sit. If you want to try to do it yourself, Meguiars & Adam's Polishes (forum sponsor) have kits available that are better than the most off the shelf auto store products.

Oh I see. Yea, I'm definitely NOT a G37 guy... I like the rawness of this car, a lot. Never even had any stereo on for the whole week, haha.
Yep I would love to go onto a meet! I will keep that on my radar. Thanks for the info on taking care of new paint and clear coat. I'm going to get a quality polishing job very soon from a well-known local body shop, and in the mean time, I'll probably ask for some advices there as well, maybe get a quote there and see if the dealer can match or contribute to the price. Thanks guys!! I will post some pics when everything's done, on a show-off section or something |

Congrats and welcome! As the others have said, tranny noise is normal, paint chips/scratch definitely not so get the dealer to fix it. Then get a clearbra to protect the front because the paint on the 370Z is soft and will chip like crazy. The bra is an investment that will protect your prize. Again, welcome and have fun!
