Graduation Z

I got my brand new 2010 370z and loving it. It's a Touring w/Sport Package and Nav. It's my first car too. Only seventeen and already have my dream car. Any advice on what to do and not to do to the car.

AK370Z 07-08-2010 09:35 PM

Congrats. Since you're in NY, make sure your rims have wheel lock. What not to do? well .... don't turn off the VDC button (unless you really know what you're doing or driven the car for a while)

P.S. I edited your thread title a little. Hope you don't mind.

memorylasts 07-08-2010 09:36 PM

Dont turn VDC off until you can confidently drive. Dont crash it. Dont be stupid. If you are going to race go to the track.

Other then that, take care of it, learn it, then use it.

IMHO no need for mods right out the door.

You are one hell of a lucky kid. Stay alive enjoy your dream.

OH! Clear Bra get it! You will regret not getting it.

LateralG'z 07-08-2010 09:38 PM

congrats, life is good to have a new Z at 17

MightyBobo 07-08-2010 09:58 PM

My advice? Drive it like an old person for a solid year or two. Literally. You need WAY more stick time...

Trips 07-08-2010 10:23 PM

Welcome and Congrats! :hello:
Great Advice AK.

fullmonty 07-08-2010 10:48 PM

Welcome, as others have said, don't turn off the VDC. Don't drive like a maniac. You are not speed racer, so don't go zipping around like a fool. Don't take turns at 90 mph. So in general drive safetly. Its a fairly powerful car, and a 17 year old boy will do what 17 year olds do, and as your first car you'll find it may not be as forgiving as you may think.

I may of dated myself with the speed racer comment but this is Speed Racer Speed Racer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nice! Leave VDC on for a while :P

It's great to have one of these when you're in your teens congrats broskie!! :hello:

Mr. Mcoupe 07-08-2010 11:00 PM

Wow. Parents are nice!

MightyBobo 07-08-2010 11:15 PM

Personally, I'd ask my parents to sign me up for an advanced drivers course if they bought me a car like this. They'd probably take it as a sign that you'd rather learn how to drive properly (even at their cost) and it'd reflect well on your insurance...

or at least 100hrs of Grand Theft Auto. :roflpuke2:

Waiz 07-08-2010 11:21 PM

Congrats, just be careful with her. I can't tell you how many 350z's I've seen wrecked by teenagers on the 350z forum so hopefully you're different.

At 17, I would not have thought that way. I would have wanted the car first.

fairladyZ34 07-09-2010 12:12 AM

leave VDC on, i got my Z when i turned 18 and after driving it for a few months decided to show off a little and turned off the VDC and luckily did no damage to the car or anyone else or myself but i spun it and gave myself a nice reality check

Jamaica 07-09-2010 02:01 AM

lol 17 and first car. Please be safe..thats all I ask. Enjoy it.

Thats why I suggested it, because I doubt the kids even thought of it.

But, knowing now what you did then, if you had some parents who were loaded enough to get you a 370Z as your first car, dont you think they'd be willing to consider flipping another $1000 or something for a quality advanced drivers class? Think of the long term effects down the road not only for their insurance, but the safety of their kid and the lesser potential of wrecking the Z.

If you honestly think that, at 17, this is a perfectly safe idea...you probably need a reality check of your own lol. The only 17 year-olds I'd even remotely trust with a car like this, are ones who's parents are actively involved in the track scene (like kart racing) that give their kid the chance to race before they even have their license.

Something tells me, this isn't the case.

Jeffblue 07-09-2010 06:06 AM

ok yea, the Z isn't the best for a new driver/kid, but really isn't that big of a difference. Any car goes fast enough to kill/hurt you.

is it a purchase or a lease?

Jesse_Hunter 07-09-2010 07:51 AM

I had a '93 nissan pick-up when I was 17. I remember burning off at ex girlfriend's houses in ultimate furry ALOT when I was 17-19. Mainly because they were a bitch, or cheated, or just pissed me off in general. The fact that I didn't have 332 HP to use in my anger, probably saved my life.

At 23 with a clean driving record, a Class A CDL, and weeks worth of driver training, tests etc, I have STILL almost wreck the Z.

This thing is powerful and it has to be respected.

TongMan 07-09-2010 08:10 AM

I don't know if its envy or jealousy or the safety of others whenever I hear that a teen had just received a brand new sports car...it scares me!!

parents these days...i can't explain it...is it love?

Naivety IMHO. I would find the best car for $1000 to give my kid. Once they proved they could go without a ticket/accident for a couple years, THEN I'd help them out.

Naivety, nah. Parents that do this think their kids are deserving and/or trustworthy.

Anyways, OP, I was in your shoes at your age. A word of advice: the next year is about SURVIVAL. You are going to be tempted to do a lot of things you shouldn't do with this car. Whether or not you live to see adulthood depends on the decisions you will have to make. Good luck ;)

Nitex 07-09-2010 09:13 AM

Congratz! welcome to the forum and an amazing car.

I was 19 when i bought my mustang GT.. and i crashed it quite a few times. Now 30 and in my 370z with 15years drive time and 11 years behind the wheel of a manual sports car, i still had a very close call in the Z.

I was being dumb and racing some kids in their dealer plate 350z. The kid must have recently bought it. I Lost control passing him around a corner and almost put my tail in his window, but regained control of the slide at the last moment. It was a reality check for sure.

However, don't let to many of us scare you away from enjoying yourself, but do try to practice some restraint. With great power comes even greater responsibility!

Or to hell with it, live life on the edge and risk trashing your dream car! :driving:

Jealousy is usually the answer.
Parents are as messed up as kids these days.

I'm 19.. The Z is my 2nd car. My parents got me a Scion tC. but got rid of that in 2 months. My parents both drive standard cars and they taught me well. It's up to the parents to teach the child.. It's not like they bought him a 800hp Supra.

The problem is that he's still a "child" and still has to go to a pediatrician. Not enough experience behind the wheel and hormones equals increased risk to himself and others on the road. Knowing how to drive stick and car control and two different things. I'm not saying the OP is a bad driver, I know nothing about him. But statistics don't lie and most young drivers don't have the skill to run a Civic to it's potential, let alone a high powered sports car.

OP, congratulations on your new ride and welcome. Your gonna be tempted to do stupid stuff like street racing or speeding. Just don't do it. period. This car will get away from you in a blink of an eye. Leave the VDC on and for gods sake don't rice it out. It took hundreds of engineers to design this car and it only takes one a-hole to screw it up.

OK? What you just said meshed with what I said though - you didnt have the Z as your very first car. Whether you had it for 2 months or not is negligible...

Both of my parents drive standard also, my dad moreso however. My mom has a 69 Camaro. My first car was a standard (1989 Geo Spectrum, before you call me a hypocrite). What are you getting at? lol

ALL Im saying, is buying a Z as your first car (at 17 no less, when you're still quite young enough to be dumb and inexperienced) isn't a very wise choice. Could the parents be giving their car to some kid they know is going to drive like grandma? Possibly. Could they also just be tossing the keys over to their child simply because they are loaded? Sure. We don't and probably wont know the answer to each - I'm just pointing out that if I were going to give the keys to that car after I bought it for him, I'd stick him in a drivers ed class that was more than just learning how to parallel park and recognizing street signs.

Incase Im not making it obvious enough: congratulations on the awesome car as a kid, but holy crap, be humble and understand that there is MUCH to learn before hooning around in it.

zZSoCalZz 07-09-2010 12:36 PM

What a banging first car... What not to do: Drive like a 17 year old lol. What to do: thank you parents! My first car was hand me down 95 Camry.

Jordo! 07-09-2010 03:03 PM

Even if you come from money (and especially if you don't) someone's first car should probably be an expendable beater... then again, I would have been happy to turn in my bus pass at 17 for a new sports car :icon17:

Good luck, OP -- go help your mom and dad with the chores -- even if they beat and starve you, this graduation present more than makes up for it :icon17:
