Recently my GoT ritual has been that after my weekly Sunday night flight to Chicago I would settle in my apartment and watch the that night's episode on my iPad at about 1AM. The following Friday I would then take about 5 shots of Bourbon and watch it again. I will miss that routine
I thought the season finale was great since this show is for viewers who appreciate delayed gratification. There is a lot of buildup just like in the books for a few episodes, but the big events do come frequently enough and are very well done. With that being said the TV series does make some of the main characters so much more interesting than in the books. I particularly like Roose Bolton and Ramsey Snow (Bolton). Lord Bolton has been a sleeper character that has been understated, but has turned out to be one of my favorites. The actor that plays him brings the character to life through great acting instead of the literary elements used in the books. He is portrayed quite differently and I would say much more effectively. The "Reek" scene was incredibly dark, but it had me chuckling. Again the actress playing Arya kills it again (pun intended). The "next time you do something like that, let me know" line was pure gold. Although they are lesser substitutes, but at least I have True Blood, Boardwalk Empire and Peyton Manning/Wes Welker to fill in the void until next season. I can't wait! |

The Arya scene was great. I really enjoyed the end of it, after the Hound finishes off what Arya started. He didn't even hesistate, he just sits down to eat their food in the background. I was wondering if the name Reek was going to be worked in. Dark. One thing though, in the books I thought Theon deserved what he got. On the show, it is hard not to start feeling bad for him, it seems so much more brutal than in the books. |

So I just finished A Dance with Dragons (which I call "A Feast for Crows Part 2) and have to say that it gets a solid 3 out of 5 stars. I still love the characters and the story, but the approach he took with AFFC and ADWD is both unfortunate and concerning; the first three books had great characters and story arcs that interwove in such a way that it always kept your interest. The last two books diverged from that only concentrating on a few characters making you wonder what was going on with your other favorites in an unsatisfying way.
The good news is that the show will probably condense and merge the storylines. I wish GRRM would get it together and get the next book out! In the meantime I started another fantasy book series: The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss. |

^ The Kingkiller stuff is awesome. Easily one of the best fantasy books to come out in a long time, and very unique in storytelling style (story within a story, sometimes within a story within a story). Well worth reading, but be prepared for the big letdown: only 2/3 of the supposed trilogy has been released, so we're waiting on the author to hurry up and finish the rest, as is the case with GoT. A recent quote from the author says he thinks the last book will be released sometime during 2014.
