Thanks everyone for the output. I seriously left the forum for like 4 hrs and I got a novel out of it. To answer some of the questions you guys asked, she is a contractor on base and she's Chinese. Definitely started listening to most of the suggestions.

Well, she doesn't have an accent at all. Just regular American English sound from California. But I'll let her know you'll be waiting around.

There have been some great suggestions here. However, since you're in Deutschland (and included club/rave), get familiar with the DJ Westbam (and the annual Loveparade, which has now been indefinitely cancelled). Plan your free week(s) on Ibiza, which is essentially a nonstop party island off the Spanish coast in the Mediterranean.
Tiesto, Oakenfold, VanDyk, Guetta are the slightly-older, more established DJs (who created the wave). Deadmau5 is considered cutting edge in that he's actively creating new material, and his collaborations with Kaskade have been very well received. Generally speaking, techno is (was) supposed to be the intellectual counterpart to trance. But lyrics are a problem if you're over in Germany. You can greatly impress your girlfriend with your knowledge / mastery / collection of Brian Eno's music, mostly from the 1980s. He was there before all of them. Electronica should never have a Cleveland Hall of Fame like Rock & Roll does, but Eno was to new music what Don Estridge was to the PC. (A final tidbit from the Eno wiki -- he's the guy who created the Microsoft Windows startup sound.) And if all fails and you're lost, just put Kraftwerk on the turntable. Can't go wrong. Finally -- to save yourself a lot of time, search for YouTube videos of any of the bolded names. |

OP, as mentioned before, there are many diff subgenres of 'Techno'. You have trance, euro dance, arena trance, tech trance, house, progressive, electro, nu disco, list goes on. I would recommend checking out this board: TranceAddict - Electronic Dance Music Forums Head over to the tracklists section to find live sets and podcasts available for download. People on that forum post from all across Europe, and around the world, so you'll have an opportunity to d/l music from DJs that are not as widely known as Tiesto, Armin, or PVD, which is a good thing. Another great site to listen to streaming audio is Digitally Imported - addictive electronic music They have the channels broken down into individual subgenres including house, electro, and even hardcore. At first it might all sound the same, but the more you listen, the more you'll be able to differentiate between the different genres of EDM. Lastly, podcasts are a great way to listen to the latest and greatest from some of the best producers round the world. Some of my favorite podcasts are Tiesto's Club Life, A State of Trance from Armin, and The Gareth Emery podcast. Tiesto plays a very diverse mix of trance, house and even nu disco, Armin is more true to trance music, and Gareth Emery plays a lot of progressive. Hope this helps. |
