Humanity's survival depends on helping each other. The whole point of this season was to show that you can't shun others or the whole thing breaks down. Remaining isolated, choosing to be an outsider, none of these choices are paths for surviving the decimation to the human existence.

While taking the risk of trusting others can lead to bad ends, ultimately its to the benefit of the group as a whole. Like RoshDawg said, it has to start somewhere.
