As to the foot shooting, the real problem is that the Walking Dead is not a story about people finding humanity and dignity during the trials of surviving the end of the world (AMC has been trying to inject that into the series from the beginning, and its a square peg problem). The Walking Dead is a story about people being more monstrous than the apparent monsters - the undead -- who are, in the end, really no different than wild animals roaming around looking for food. The Walking Dead is just not a warm and fuzzy kind of story. Then again, why would a zombie apocalypse story lift our spirits? That's not really what they're typically written to do. They're supposed to make us feel claustrophobic and uneasy, apprehensive about what's around the next corner or lurking in the shadows creeping slowly up on you (well, overly fast zombies notwithstanding...) If things continue, after the Negan story it will begin to get very, very good in terms of really complex ideas about what it means to live as a human being in a dead and desolate world... we're not quite there yet. In any case, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is fantastic as Negan. If people turn away from the Negan/Savior "All Out War" story arc, they will never be able to endure the next one... Anyway, I'm looking forward to Negan's conversation with Spencer next week

I agree that this was the best episode since the premier. We got to progress a lot of stories, some better than others, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan got to show of as Negan again. The mid-season finale looks to be a good episode as well. Hopefully we go into the break on a high note and keep the momentum going for the rest of the season.

Even the "My Only Sunshine" while Negan practices his swing is from the comic.

The only major difference is that Carl was all alone (not with Jesus) when he hopped in the back of the truck to get there and he was also (seemingly) much younger.

They also dialed down how he looked with the bandages of... he kind of looks like an apple with a bite out of it in the comic ...

And Negan does show a mix of being psychotic as well as tender... he's a kind and gentle sadistic killer

Negan is a genuinely scary dude. He can show emotion, but its usually hard to predict what he'll actually do... He can smile affably, walk right up to you, smiling, and gut you without blinking.

And negan apologizing was weird. Like did he actually feel sympathy or is that just another one of his weird psycho head f**ks?

Negan is sort of dissociated from his emotions. He can show them, feel them (apparently), but then do something totally opposite of what you'd expect based on that emotion (this doesn't always work to his advantage... but it usually does). Negan is probably best thought of as a psychopath. Manipulative, cunning, even charming, but a ruthless and sadistic killer at (his perceived) need with no apparent remorse, just resignation at worst. He occasionally loses it and just freaks the hell out -- highly unstable when pushed too far, but usually he's in control of himself or can compose himself if need be. He's a complex character -- easily the most complex (and occasionally over-the-top) one in the series.

I was expecting the storyline after the premier to be much more linear towards all these different groups getting together to go after the saviours. Now it's to the point where I don't even think about that 7:00 time on Sunday when it comes on and just stream it to catch up whenever I get around to it. Haven't thought of it that way since season 3, which almost lost me. I'm sure it'll turn around at some point. Up there will be the whole midseason break and everything between before any of that satisfaction comes to fruition.

Yeah... Negan is written to be somewhat concerned with appearing/behaving in a bigoted manner in regard to race/POC and is generally anti-misogynistic (compare and contrast with the comic version of the Governor who

, but he also seems to be the "No Fat Chicks" t-shirt wearer in the zombie apocalypse...It's not really consistent with the character, but Kirkman is clearly trying to balance plausibility in his characters (AMC tends to fail at this...), while also recognizing that being grossly offensive to his readers would cause more harm than good... it works well enough with Negan given his idiosyncratic nature, but yeah, he can be a real jerk-off. Google "Here's Negan" if you want to read some of his back story. It's an ongoing mini-series (up to part 8, I think). It gives a little insight into his nature, might reveal something about his openness to people on the one hand while being a sadistic nut on the other... it will also give some background on why his bat is named Lucile and why he "treats her like a lady", or whatever. And, for whatever its worth, its all cannon -- written by Kirkman as offical back story.

Notwithstanding an insulin-secretion inducing ending (Darryl? Home for X-mas?! And he brought a big ass gun! Well, hot damn! Merry and happy!) that AMC insisted on (see further, my griping a few posts up...), this was a pretty good episode.
The water zombies and trip to the boat was not in the comic (but might have been a wink-nod to the Michonne Telltale Games story), although I really liked it! Most of the rest was also pretty good, and/or cannon (again, FWIW... just because Kirkman wrote it, that doesn't automatically make it any good, I just want to see either same or better -- but not worse!) Compare and contrast! Spencer got Negan is a post-zombie apocalypse douche-bag eliminator -- bring him a human douche, and he will gut it Oh. It seems fans complained about Negan's beard, so, it's been shaved off. Also, Rosita's scar is actually one worn by Andrea (on the other cheek) in the comic, but whatever, I guess... bring on February and All Out War!

Good gut-gore part though. Saw it coming a million miles away, but nonetheless satisfied with the result. F**k that guy.
