My Macbook charger JUST died... The 85w is safe to use on the older 60w Macbooks, correct?

Yes, you can always go higher, never lower. FYI, going lower would cause delay in charge of course but most importantly one of the processor would not function because the lack of voltage. Also, what year MacBook do you have? It came with a MagSafe charger right? If so then yes.

yes, you can use the higher wattage on for a lower wattage laptop. there are power management built in, BUT, i would NOT use the 85w for a macbook air. but macbook to macbook pro or vice versa is not an issue.
