Saga of Wheels

Hello all,

I put in a custom order for Forgestar size and color on November 25th.

- The Wheels were part of a group buy so we waited til everybody was in, then submitted the group order.
- My size wheel was back ordered, wait more.
- My wheels did not pass quality inspection, wait.
- The wheels are powder-coated the wrong color, and poorly done at that.
- They are now in the process of stripping their sh*t powder-coat job, and putting on the CORRECT color ...PROPERLY, wait.
- I have been waiting for 12 weeks so far.... *sigh

That is all, just needed to vent.

Hang in there man.

osbornsm 02-20-2014 11:54 AM

Update:

After the wheels went back to the powdercoater, they tell me that the red color i ordered is not a "viable option". Wouldn't you have told me that 3 months ago when i f*cking ordered them?

Damnit there's some bad service out there.

GaleForce 02-20-2014 11:57 AM

Damn, that sucks.

They say they're going thru their entire webpage to remove "Textured Red" from available options.

Meulen 02-20-2014 12:23 PM

looks like they need to get a new powder coater!

If you ask them to credit you I can hook you up with a powder coater that can do any color you want.

We're using the same PowderCoater that Forgestar uses... although with less than stellar results. :shakes head:

Well......

being I used to work for a powder coater......:) There are countless color options. There should be another product close to what you want. I have never heard of a color that was not a viable option. Usually, what you see is a bad batch of powder or a flaw in the process. There may be another supplier out there that has your color in a different brand. I'm just saying it's probably a viable option, but they are probably having problems with a supplier or don't want to spend the money to buy a new batch of that color for you.

On yeah, i've been furiously IM-ing with the vendor all afternoon.

UPDATE: The color "textured red" is not available for Forgestar wheels. Only a fire-engine red is avail... yuck. HOWEVER, i spoke with the Manufacturer via the Vendor... and found that the candy red color above IS available.

So the new wheel color is called: Blood Red

I'm okay w this... about 2 more weeks they say.... :shakes head:

Not sure I'd want a forged wheel heated, bead blasted and then reheated. Maybe Meulen can chime in

Xplicit97 02-23-2014 10:30 AM

I don't believe the monoblock F14s are forged.. Only the three piece I believe.

Forgestar calls it Flow Forming, but def NOT forged.

I can see why some people would be nervous. I'm not an expert on steel so this may be a better question for the wheel manufacter. What I do know is forging is a heating process that takes steel to 2000+ degrees. This is just before the steels melting point and the metal is able to shaped. There's something about the carbon in the steel at that temp that creates a chemical reaction hardening the steel. I believe, heating it up again after that chemical reaction takes place may distort the metal. However, the powdercoating process is only heated to around 400 degrees. I don't believe that would be near enough to worry about distorting the metal. It's significantly below it's melting point. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. If you think about, forged rods and pistons probably are subject to more heat in their own use.

Ubetit 02-26-2014 08:50 PM

I was thinking more in terms of forged aluminum. Not sure I've seen forged steel wheels.

Yeah, same deal if they are aluminum forged. It's worth a call to the wheel mfg. they'll know what aluminum alloy was used and what heat tolerance they can take.

Oh, now the center caps don't fit because the paint is too thick.

*sigh

Vendor is sending new ones, free... Pain in the @ss included!!

DJ86 05-03-2014 01:15 AM

Any suggestions for me with regards to dealing with Forgestar? I'm in the 18th week and still awaiting on my wheels. I've been given multiple delivery dates. As of last Friday, the vendor told me they just got the front cores in and they would try to have them ready ASAP... However, no dates were given.... Like you, I'm certainly beyond frustrated at this point.
