Quick question. What is the downside to aluminum thick walled exhaust over stainless steel besides looks. Anyone?

edub370 12-11-2014 12:07 PM

cost...

aluminum takes extra care to weld, more expensive equipment, more expensive labor (i know aluminum welders who make $80+/hr), and needs to be relatively pure to resist/hold heat, cracking, and daily abuse. You're looking at easily $5k for a typical low end aluminum exhaust.

performance...

One interesting property of steel for exhausts is that it holds heat to a certain temperature so that you don't get a lot of thermal loss. The property of holding heat versus dispelling it allows gasses to be propelled out of the pipes rather than having to reheat the walls and lose energy like in aluminum

project_zed 12-13-2014 05:30 PM

Hmm but how much performance really is lost.

Also does anyone else's Z make a creaking noise when you sit in it or after you engage the parking brake and let the brake pedal go?

welp, car's up for the winter. time to start buying parts lol

Well, this thread has been dead for a while... Any suggestions on what I should do next? Save for wheels is my first option or look into headlight modification?

m3chhawk 12-24-2014 03:46 PM

Wheels and mod your headlights yourself

Anyone besides me driving the Z daily? I have only seen one or two in lee's summit. It was a base pre-13 fascia.

I'm considering doing the headlights myself but very scared to baked them open. Other than that the painting and halos should be pretty easy... I think. Anyone bake open their headlights themselves?

edub370 12-26-2014 05:43 PM

Jackson and Premal did their headlights themselves
