The gunmetal E46 M3 you see parked out there belongs to a professor as well. |

Well I come out of that door that is right ahead of the parking lot, so I never really look back at the cars that are there. I could just go down the list of my professors, but I'll just PM it to you. I am interested in what cars they drive. I thought you might have been one of my professors too at first

I wish I was one of the professors... if I made what some of them are making right now I wouldn't be in a 370Z |

Well I remember one day in our school's newspaper they published some of the professor's salaries. I didn't read the article myself, but heard from other people that they were making 6 figure salaries.

I work in financial planning/management. Around here, if you're supporting a typical family, you need to make around $250k to feel truly "comfortable."

Daaaaayyyyymmmmm. That's crazy. Is that just for the wealthier areas in NoVa/MD/DC? I hope so because that will seriously affect my future plans. I know engineers make good money but idk if its anywhere near $250k.

Well I used to do the payroll and accounting for that department so I know exactly how much they all make.
As for a basic breakdown... Graduate students and researchers: 27k - 31k (depending on time there) Postdocs: ~40k Faculty (depending on title and tenure): ranges from 67k as far up as 200k+ for chair/department heads Then there are some special cases where a professor is being paid by two departments and they cap out even higher. |

You can make good money around here as an engineer, but you just have to find the right company. At this point in your life though (early 20's), $250k is obviously way more than you need. Right now, you by yourself probably only need 75k-80k to live reasonably well. Once you add a wife and kids, that's when the 200k+ income really helps.
Chemical Engineering has some of the highest salaries for all engineers, so I think you will be just fine

Never settle for "enough" money! I hated people figuring in if I had a family, mortgage etc... What I say is you earn your worth, no matter your situation. So if you're worth 250k to a company at 19yrs old or 65...TAKE IT.
