Does anyone remember how illuminated kick plates attach?

I have to remove mine to swap them out with the new ones but I forget how they're attached to the car.

I remember the plastic ones being attached with little plastic grommets and I just sorta worked around the edge of the kick plate underneath the weather seal until they popped up.

Ideas?

Two pop grommets, one at each end and 3M tape in the middle where the third factory grommet used to be.

dmhenderson 02-26-2013 06:27 AM

Ah perfect thanks. I knew there was something different about it but I couldn't remember what it was.

eastwest2300 02-26-2013 09:23 AM

This is a pretty install, pretty much plug and play..

dmhenderson 02-26-2013 09:48 AM

Yeah I did it before on my old Z but it has been a while. Picking up the car late tonight from D&V so I probably won't get around to messing with the kick plates until this weekend.

eastwest2300 02-26-2013 10:27 AM

These are your new kick plates that you had custom done? you havent turned them on yet?

dmhenderson 02-28-2013 08:52 AM

So I went to pop these out last night and...they wouldn't pop out. I took a screwdriver wrapped in electric tape and tried to pry them off and they wouldn't budge. I don't want to break my old ones if I can help it or worse, end up with the grommet breaking off inside the car.

Suggestions?

No. Like I said, I went to pop the old ones off and they didn't come off easily. Want to avoid damaging the paint on the running boards if I can.

DEpointfive0 02-28-2013 09:30 AM

Hey DM, can you post pics of it?
I want to see how well (hopefully) my buddy hooked you up

dmhenderson 02-28-2013 09:36 AM

As soon as I am able to the old ones off the car lol

Lol, I just wanna know if the metal came out straight or had any dents of any kind, but I guess I'll wait........
You
Better be devoting 8 hours a day to this project dammit!!! LOL

dmhenderson 02-28-2013 09:39 AM

No dents or warps in the metal. He did a very good job. Actually had a mini heart attack when I took them out of the box because it looked like there was a huge crease in one of the aluminum pieces (turned out it was the protective plastic covering)

Awesome!

To anyone else, he does good work!!! But you gotta pay him, or bribe him more than DMHenderson

dmhenderson 02-28-2013 09:42 AM

Hey I told him to set his own price and he quoted $20. I gave him $30 and paid for shipping to/from him because I felt guilty.

Lol, I know, I'm not trying to bash or guilt you, I talked to him about the price too

I'm just saying that in that WTB thread, I thought I saw someone say that they'd pay $50, lol
So maybe he'd be back in for $50?

eastwest2300 02-28-2013 10:20 AM

Dude, he should be charging a whole lot more than $50...

dmhenderson 02-28-2013 10:20 AM

I agree.

Just trying to make it clear I didn't lowball the guy. I asked him to name his price.

eastwest2300 02-28-2013 10:23 AM

Work like that is easily worth a $100 or more.

dmhenderson 02-28-2013 01:01 PM

I'll give it another shot this evening and see if I can get one of my old kick plates popped off.

Thats what Im saying, so how are you having trouble? Especially if you've done it before.

dmhenderson 02-28-2013 02:47 PM

Well the last set i detached were the plastic ones. I have never detached the illuminated type before. I'm probably just being overly careful.

eastwest2300 02-28-2013 03:00 PM

Dude, they're the same underneath.. do what you did last time. They pop right off, you just gotta get your fingers slid underneath them. Hell look at your new set, and see where the connection points are and focus on those areas, im pretty sure theres only 2 connecting points.

dmhenderson 02-28-2013 03:24 PM

I didn't spend a huge amount of time on it. I'll give it another shot.

eastwest2300 02-28-2013 04:21 PM

dont fvck it up...lol

I came into this thread not knowing what you had done with the kickplates. What did you have done?

dmhenderson 04-10-2013 01:23 PM

I installed a set before. This is resolved. I got the new ones on. Old ones were dented and I wanted to swap them out for a new set with red LEDs instead of orange.

seizer8 05-26-2013 01:52 PM

I need to do the same with the one on the passengers side. Was tithe double stick tape that was making it hard to get off?
I found a used one online to replace my dented one.

dmhenderson 05-26-2013 02:05 PM

Yes, Just wrap a screwdrver and electric tape and work at it slowly. It'll come up eventually.
