Are you planning a stop in Kentucky or West Virginia on the return trip? If not I'd be tempted to make your return trip through 129, tail of the dragon, and back up Blue-ridge,

I'd have to travel at least a few miles on the old Route 66.

Too bad they closed "Wally World" (or "America's Favorite Family Fun Park") after the Griswolds had their little "incident" otherwise that would be a good place to unwind.
Seriously, it sounds like it will be an "epic" road trip. I'd be up for a drive like that; but the wife, not so much . She prefers the luxury of getting there in a few hours; not weeks. I'd be like and would have the time of my life. Good luck with your plans and keep us posted...

I did the I-40 trip from NM to PA a couple of times when I was stationed out there. Never did any sightseeing along the way so I can't offer much advice. Will say this, watch yer cornhole crossing TN. They seemed to have more highway patrol than anywhere else I've been. Also, in AZ anything 11 and over in the construction zone will get you impounded (and they are always working on I-40). Flagstaff is nice but a short run and too many hippies.
