Default Oil Cooler Questions

So I am planning to get an oil cooler this spring.

Was wondering what sizes you guys are running and what you use to block it off in the cooler months.

I am thinking of getting a 19 row cooler:

That's not a bad price for a Setrab core, stainless lines, and a Mocal sandwhich plate. I would recommend getting the optional thermostatic plate, though.

To block the cooler off you can use anything in your imagination to block airflow.

Yea I am set on getting the thermostatic plate for the 19r.
It seems like I will just zip tie on a metal plate when its cold out.

Guess I will hit up Kirk's Garage and set up an appointment to put on the oil cooler when I am due for my next oil change.

Any idea how many additional quarts I will need with the cooler?

I'd figure at least 1-1.5 quarts.

One thing to consider would be adding an oil pressure gauge. If one of the lines comes off the fitting you don't have much time at all before you're running dry and kill the engine.

Don't bother with the 19 row. Go strait to the 25 row. You really can't over cool this car very easily in the summertime. A thermostatic plate will take care of the winter time...

Actually, the thermostatic plate will not allow your oil temps to get over 160 degrees in the winter. I have a 25 row cooler with a Mocal Thermostatic Plate and I absolutely need to run a block off plate. I fabricated a plate out of fiberglass cloth, spray adhesive, and rubber spray. Not pretty, but effective.

And those brackets are used to support my splitter which is off the car for some winter refurbishing.

You don't think 19 row will be enough? I don't plan to track the car much, it will mainly be to keep the temps lower on my daily commute in the summer. I saw 250 degrees this past summer during some spirited driving and want to prevent that this year.

Just trying to keep the temps down when it starts getting warmer.

Yea I figured as much, I will probably just get a piece of sheet metal and zip tie it in front of the cooler in the winter.

Well, the last thing you want to do when you're having fun is go into limp mode.

That's what she said.

Limp mode??

but dont you think nissan would have included an oil cooler if the Z wasnt made for hot temperatures.. thats what makes me question the need for one the most.
