Opinions on 19" Ray's Wheels

So, I have an opportunity to get a set of BRAND NEW 19" Rays Wheels w/ Tires and TPMS included. Wheels + tires will have 0 miles on them, perfect condition.

Asking price for them is 1200.00 + trade of my base 18" wheels w/ about 7k on them.

It's a tempting offer and was looking on thoughts and opinions on this. I sort of want to go aftermarket wheels so I am still on the fence about the deal.

mdztuners 07-07-2011 02:40 PM

If we're talking RAYS wheels i.e. VOLK, etc, those are high quality and very pricey. Are they solid or multi-piece?

Yes, sorry. They are the 19" RAYS wheels available with the sport package.

Waiz 07-07-2011 02:47 PM

Sounds a tad high if you're trading your 18" wheels.

Maybe try to talk him down to $1,000 or lower?

redline727 07-07-2011 02:49 PM

I don't think you will get a nicer package for that dollar amount even taking into consideration you will be trading your 18's. I have the sport package and I love those wheels I think for the first time wheels will probably be one of the later mods I do bc I have them maybe thats just me though. But you cant go wrong trying to talk him down a little either though like Waizzz said

:iagree: These wheels go for between 1200 and 1600 without a trade involved, and the 18's can sell for between 500 and 800. It's a ripoff to pay 1200 on top of trading your 18's.

Cmike2780 07-07-2011 02:52 PM

Not really a great deal if you include your stock 18's/tires/tpms units. The Sports package Rays should fetch around $1,200-1,400 including tires sensors, which means throwing your 18's into the mix will cost you roughly $1,800. I'm lowballing the average selling price of the stock 18's at around $600 (usually $650-850 with tires & sensors). Sell your set separate or wait for another set. It's easy enough to find.

Even with 0 miles on them though???

redline727 07-07-2011 02:56 PM

tires alone cost $1200+ in those sizes

Honestly, who cares about the mileage? You can occasionally watch the classified section and find a pristine set with 10k mi on it for 1200-1600. Why pay more?

And why sell the 18's? Save em up and put winter tires on 'em.

I would def agree to prefer keep my 18's as well...I didnt realize you can find them in good shape for the price range you have seen. I stand corrected he should keep looking then if deals like that are out there

Masa 07-07-2011 03:00 PM

Thanks for the replies, yea I was unsure because I have my eye set on some Forgestars. I have no doubt I could talk them down to 1000.00 + trade as well so the price shouldn't be an issue. Only reason I was tempted was because this set is fresh.

As of now I am leaning on keeping 18's for winter set up and getting Forgestars for summer set up.

They're probably slightly more expensive, since they're more rare. You might get off cheaper by powdercoating your sport rims gunmetal :roflpuke2:

I am definitely leaning towards picking up a set of 40th wheels or powdercoating a set of sport wheels. They don't come up for sale as much, but I have seen them as low as $1200 but most are around $1500-1800. Cost around $500 per wheel if you buy them new from FBNISSAN. Might be a lot easier to just get sport wheels and powdercoat them.

Thanks!

Actually I think Motor Trend had a 7AT tested at 13.1, but I don't think they had a video of it. My 2nd best time was like a 13.2 though. In summer weather I couldn't do better than 13.5 stock. Just got an exhaust installed and hoping to go back soon and see what I can do.

4r3s 07-08-2011 07:38 AM

Its not that great of a deal. Keep the 18" for winters if its your dd and buy something nice for the summer. Oh and then be prepared to want to upgrade to a BBK once the non sports brakes get swallowed by the larger wheel. this is exactly where I'm at now.

Yup, I thought about that too. I may stick with 18's and just go wider. The set I have in mind is 18x9 front and 18x11 rear - Forgestar CF5 in anthracite.

I would consider doing a lighter color wheel. I'm happy with my setup but if I were to do it again I would opt for the silver version of the wheels I bought. i feel like the rims get lost in the dark background of the wheel well. Part of that might be fixed with a bbk that is colored to stand out though. anyway just my 2 cents, its your car and you can do what ever you want with it!

4r3s 07-08-2011 10:02 AM

you should totally get the pink ones!

I've been thinking of better brakes regardless of whether I replace the wheels.

Have you really thrashed the car with the base brakes? They're fine for getting around town, but they're not so good at slowing from 100+ mph (or so I've heard:ugh2:), and long drives with windy curves bring about some brake fade.

BBK's can fit under the base 18's from what I understand.

AFAIK I have not experienced any brake fade. FBNISSAN guy tells me that the sports package brake kit will fit with the non sports rims. Oh and there is a thread somewhere about someone upgrading to the sports brakes from base and they worked just fine; I don't feel like searching for the thread. you'd have to find out for yourself if other bbks would fit. Its like $1600 to do the upgrade and the bigger brakes would be nice but right now I would only be doing it for the look...which is why I haven't done anything yet. Owning this car and trying to save for a house to buy at the sametime is counter productive...

On the long drive down to Zdayz, when the road started getting curvy right before Fontana, Dan G and I both experienced very scary brake fade. We were the only non-sport Z's in the group.

b1adesofcha0s 07-08-2011 12:52 PM

I'm definitely will be upgrading to the sports package brakes at somepoint in the future. Will be part of my process for getting the Z track ready. Are the rear brakes necessary to upgrade, or will just upgrading the fronts be OK?

I would do all four. especially if your gonna track the car. You will be putting extra strain on your fronts if you dont match the rear. Plus I would imagine a smaller back brake will cause more weight forced to the front when breaking into a turn and will slow you down. (just thinking of the physics of it)

Very true. It just cost twice as much to do front and rear, but I guess I have to pay to play. :tiphat:

Is it sad i actually saw those in person on a car?

I was headed into work at UMD and I saw this orange New Beetle with those flower petal wheels and the eyelashes installed on the car. I was impressed (to have the balls to drive a car like that and not care) and at the same time I was :shakes head:
