Speeding ticket in MD...whose got one?
Anyone got a speeding ticket in MD since the new law about having to request a waiver hearing or a trial?
I got pulled over the other day by the MD Transportation Police for doing 70 in a 55 zone on 895. According to the new rules, I can't just not pay the fine and wait for a court date. (Shadowquad let me know this at the last meet) I have an Indiana license but I have my car registered here in MD. So my options are to request a trial (plead not guilty) or request a waiver hearing (guilty with an explanation). Does anything help in this state such as traffic school like in VA, or should I just go to court and plead guilty and ask for leniency? |

Yes, I was speeding. I wasn't planning on requesting a trial and not guilty. I was just wondering if it would help to do an online traffic court / ask for leniency and plead guilty. I've considered getting an attorney but I didn't know if it was worth it, but it's worth it to me to pay up to 700 not to get any points.

That sucks man, best of luck to you
My sister had one a couple months ago, but I'm not sure if it was before or after the new law. She went to court and she was told if she took the class, she wouldn't get any points. It was also her first ticket so the judge may have been a bit more lenient. |

Here is the link to IN state law and according to the agreement they "can" put points on. MD has a similar law but doesn't assign points unless it's a DWI, manslaughter, etc... Indiana Code 9-28-1 I was speeding so I'll take the punishment, I'm just trying to figure out if taking a class will sway the judge to give me Probation Before Judgement or to maybe even just give me a large fine. Brian, I used to live in Bloomington, Indiana and got a ticket there 8 years ago but the points never transfered over. The story is different though for those having these states license NJ/NY/PA/MD/VA.

Me personally, if I got a speeding ticket, im definitely going to court, and putting in a guilty plea.

If it is not an issue with your schedule, you could plead not guilty and then go to court to make a case for you. You might be lucky and get the fine and number of points significantly reduced (in the eventuality that you transfer your IN license to MD license). You might have a judge in a good mood and ask for leniency in the fine amount.

I got a stoplight violation a few years back in PA (it was yellow dammit) and PA vehicle code has a section where I could basically plead gulity and pay the fine, but not get the points. The condition was you had to get the officer to agree to not dispute this prior to court, most do not because they think court is a complete waste of time anyhow.
MD may have something similar, but it would still show on your record I would think, as would taking the class and the plea. |
