NOVA drivers beware: Potholes galore

It's getting really bad out there, guys. I'm talking not just tire puncturing, wheel bending potholes... I'm talking suspension destroying ones. The roads are very well torn up, including a few key routes that are my only option on the way out of work.

Fairview Park Drive between 29 and 50 heading in the direction of 50 has some major potholes in the right lane that will eat your tires.

The 50 west-bound ramp onto 495 has suspension eating potholes all along the seam from the old ramp to the temporary ramp. Construction barrels are blocking a clear route around them so you have to very carefully angle over the least dangerous ones. Hopefully VDOT fills them in overnight, they are the worst I've seen, with the worst section of the seam being probably half a car width wide, 12" deep, and 24" across. Definitely will eat you up.

Given the state budget I'm sure we're going to have a lot of road surface issues this year... gah.

Steve, FWIW you can report pot holes to VDOT at: Report a Road Problem

They will eventually get to it. By reporting them to VDOT it might help get it filled sooner.

Just did on WTOP's site, will do the same there.

You're right though its pretty ugly out there. I hit one on the way home I thought my axle had just broken in two!

Yeah, I hit one last week that jerked the steering wheel so hard it hurt my wrist. I thought for sure I'd have bent something or punctured the tire, but to my surprise there was no damage.

PapoZalsa 03-15-2010 08:45 PM

That sucks for a state that you pay high vehicle property taxes but they cannot fix the damn streets.

m4a1mustang 03-15-2010 08:46 PM

Well, to their credit, the ones I am talking about are probably less than 24 hours old. We'll see tomorrow if they've been patched.

madelf 03-15-2010 09:00 PM

Agreed. Narrowly missed on I-95 about a week ago. Saw the car in front of me sink in.

I just can't wait until we're well into spring. This winter has been brutal on the roads, and this rain hasn't helped much either.

It's like that here, too. I can't drive anywhere w/o hitting a series of unavoidable holes that makes the car feel like it's getting a massive flat.

m4a1mustang 03-15-2010 09:05 PM

I'm actually least worried about a flat. I'm worried about ripping a corner of the car off.

I'm making mental notes of where NOT to drive the Z.

There's a couple here in Columbia, but not too bad considering.

Hi-TecDesigns 03-16-2010 11:32 AM

I take the occasional trip to Wheaton coming off of SR29... SR193 is insane on the pothole scale, and that was before the rain! Now you might as well be driving on a gravel road with a river running through it.

hazzazi 03-16-2010 11:46 AM

it's pretty bad here, i actually managed to slash the side wall on my xterra tire, i had to buy a new one...

Yeah, 193 is a shithole no matter what. Thankfully I have no need to use it or head down in that direction.

Guess I've been lucky so far -- have been able to catch them AND have the swerve option -- have hit some smaller ones. Definitely a difference hitting'em in the Z vice the Truck!

Noticed a crew working on Backlick Road today (one of my alt routes to Ft. Belvori) -- there are a few doozies on Braddock Rd & 7100 -- hope VDOT will get to them soon!!!

BREAK, BREAK

Hey Jon -- my Fat Gecko arrived today -- will probably be a few weeks before I get to do some test mounts/shots, but it appears to be pretty rugged. Switched from the Sticky Pod to the Gecko after our discussions and a little research -- thanks!

No worries, it was Lance (toohip) who originally turned me onto the Fat Gecko. I'm still waiting for mine but it should here this week. So there will be at least three of us who have the Gecko to video on the way down for ZdayZ.

Have you ever drive in I-64?

zZSportZz 03-16-2010 11:26 PM

Its pretty shitty in MD too...

RandyJamesA 03-17-2010 09:13 AM

Ashton Ave in Manassas is a mess. You need a moon rover to drive that road.

I will have to agree with that even that I have not driven down in PR for over a year.

rtcpenguin 03-17-2010 08:11 PM

They've actually cleared a lot of them out already. In fair lakes they're pretty much gone, 66 is okay, and 28 is fine.

The worst one I saw all season was on the outer loop near braddock road. I hit it going 70ish and I thought my rim was destroyed, but it looks fine. Hopefully thats fixed.

m4a1mustang 03-17-2010 08:42 PM

They cleared out the ones that I was talking about in the first post, which is nice. They've been pretty good at responding to the major potholes within 24 hours.
