Thats scary then... I started checking mine every 2nd fillup after I almost did the same thing when I first got my Z. I almost ran it bone dry and it scared me into checking my oil alot more.

the hook is needed when you're breaking the speed of sound barrier. the hook goes first so that the sonic boom doesn't strip away the paint from your z. that's the real reason it's there.

Been thinking about this since I bought mine two months ago. I traditionally always yellow film my fogs. In fact I still have a roll of film but not sure to pull the trigger on this one or not. ...
