Default jwick Build Thread - First BP - G37T in existence

Welcome everyone. The following will detail my efforts to be the first G37 with a BP Twin Scroll Turbo kit. I selected the BP kit for several reasons. The primary, or 1A, being that it is completely DIYable and I prefer to be the one working on my car. 1B is the fact that Sasha’s customer service is second to none. This build has/will take place over a couple months as I get everything ready to go. I will try my best to keep everything up to date and of course include as many pictures as possible. As with any 1st time build, I will likely need some assistance along the way so I definitely appreciate all those willing to provide applicable advice.

On to the good stuff…

I bought the car in May of 2010. I had the first mods purchased prior to the car even having 1,200 break-in miles. I worked on it for the first 18 months or so and it’s basically been the same ever since. Mods pre-FI, in order of install best I can remember:

- Stillen CBE
- Eibach Proset Spring Kit
- GT Spec Strut Bar
- Stillen Gen 3 Intake
- Berk HFCs
- UpRev Tune from JTran
- Hotchkis Sways
- SPC Front Control Arms
- Whiteline Diff Bushings
- Whiteline Rear End Links
- NISMO Diff Cover
- And I’m sure there’s a mod or two I forgot along the way

Current NA mods staying on the car:

- Stillen CBE (minus Y-Pipe)
- Eibach Proset Spring Kit
- GT Spec Strut Bar
- Hotchkis Sways
- SPC Front Control Arms
- Whiteline Diff Bushings
- Whiteline Rear End Links
- NISMO Diff Cover

Turbo Build List:

- BP Twin Scroll Turbo Kit (Precision 6266 Turbo – Ball Bearing Upgrade) – See Boosted Performance Profile Page for complete details
- GReddy Oil Filter Relocation Adapter (added Thremostat to Oil Cooler)
- CSF 7012 Radiator
- Z1 Motorsports Full Face Clutch/Flywheel
- Z1 Motorsports Silicone Radiator Hoses
- ZSpeed CSC
- GReddy Profec 2 Spec B Boost Controller
- Innovate LC-2 and DB Gauge
- GReddy Multi D/A Gauge (Boost/Oil Temp/Oil Pressure/Water Temp/Fuel Pressure)
- A fucton of heat management items (header wrap, thermo-tec, inferno heat shield, turbo bag, etc.)

Goals:

- Fun!
- Satisfaction of installing it all myself (with some help from good friends and support from the GF since she never complains about money spent or time involved)
- 400wft-lbs on a DynoJet with the most area under the curve as possible. The key is as much as I can get ensuring reliability.

Special Thanks go to:

- First and foremost, Sasha for building a top notch DIY kit and being the definition of customer service
- Awesome Z (clutch install – only part not DIY)
- Chuck33079 (my boy – main man on the install assistance and the one that pushed me over the cliff to pull the trigger on this ‘little’ project)
- JTran (Custom Turbo Tune among other support related stuff)
- O&G (confirmation of product selection and general knowledge, plus almost as much enthusiasm as Chuck and I for this build)
- Z1 Motorsport (Jon is a righteous individual always willing to provide platform knowledge and make sure you are getting exactly what you need)
- GaleForce - working with me to create his first G37 custom Double Pod A-Pillar (pics included further back)
- Phunk - helping source GReddy multi-guage pressure sender to mate with his multi-adapter (pics included further back)
- Tony (Fast Intentions) - working with me to supply a custom G37 exhaust to allow me to custom fab the appropriate connections to the turbo downpipe
- jlo370z - fellow BP brotha support and being there to swap crank case filters with me
- Nathan - genius behind all the electrical/wiring magic
- Reservation – place holder for forum members that I know will be more than willing to provide build assistance considering how wonderful this community is

Pre-tear down

Pile of stuff going on the car

We spent all of Thursday night doing preliminary checks to make sure that this kit would indeed bolt-up on a G37. We test fit the FMIC and then reinstalled the bumper. We also checked the first charge pipe to make sure it routed the same way as on a Z.

Pre-check out prior to full tear down.

FMIC Check

Another test fit pic

Exa Pump Installed (the first time...detail that out later)

GReddy Plate Installation:

Bracket Removed

Grinding Wheel

GReddy Mounted (used a pneumatic right angle drill to drill the sub-frame. The lag bolts were hard enough to self-tap as they went in)

Modified Oil Filter Setup (Added GReddy Thermostat Plate)

GReddy Thermostat with Oil Temp Probe Installated

Modified Turbo feed line for both OEM and After Market Oil Pressure Sender

Oil Pan Removed

Cleaning Oil Pan Surface

Spacer RTVed

There are a lot of braided oil lines routing behind the radiator.

End of Day one...

Day two we had to adjust some things so it was a lot of two steps forward and one back. Not unexpected since this was the first go around on a G37.

So the only major issue we came up with getting this kit to fit on a G37 is that the Exa pump hits the stock S bumper.

Interference Location

Stock G 'S' Bumper (can only get a 6MT in a S so all BP-G37s will have this issue if running stock bumper)

So the solution we came up with, which turned out really easy, was to move the Exa pump from the right set of frame bolts to share the same mounting location as the FMIC. This required us to cut a bunch of zip ties and readjust Friday's oil line routing but all in all a pretty easy solution. I know the cuts I made are not the prettiest but considering it cannot be seen once the bumper was on I was not willing to stop working to run to Lowe's for the proper Dremel cutting tool. (FYI...I think we could have gotten away without cutting if you placed the flare nut behing the pump bracket housing before you started threading it but I wanted it where I could pull it without a second pair of hands.)

New Location fro Exa Pump

HFCs removed and prepping for Crossover Pipe Install

Crossover Pipe Installed

Final routing for oil lines and charge pipe (had to move everything once I test fit the sway bar and realized we had some interference)

Turbo Mounted

Remainder of Hotside Piping

Weekend Intermission:
Look how much less is on that table. Much appreciation to Chuck for all his help!

I love how the Turbo Box says Boosted Performce. Sasha, did you pay extra for that?

Yes sir. I forgot to mention that I had to modify the way you handle the PS Cooler as the one in the G is about 3-4" longer than that in a Z so the way Sasha moves it back won't work.

Long story short I bent the hardline bracket a little and zip tied the right side of the cooler itself to the vertical support in the middle of the radiatior that supports the hood latch and the left side I zip tied to the condenser air dryer.

Everything else in my build were just options I added to the kit (i.e. GReddy Thermostat Plate and Aftermarket Fuel Pressure Sender) and would be identical on a Z.

Let me tell you that wrapping that crossover pipe almost cost me a GF (she was my second pair of hands in the process) and was by far the most difficult thing I've wrapped to date. It's a shame that that's the best it'll ever look. After a few heat cycles it'll be completely different.

Red is nice but I like the blue contrast on the graphite. Not to mention both you and Chuck have red going on.
