Congrats on the completed build, can't wait to see results. love the look of 40ths

that varis front bumper
|
Congrats! You are going to love the boost!! I know I do!
|
Yesterday was a big day! Threw down the money on the complete Varis Arising II kit. In my previous post I wondered why I hadn't considered it before...well, because it is new moron! :)
2-4 months...really hoping it is closer to 2. I want to take it to SEMA and Z Nationals. Will have it painted at Automotive Concepts here in Minnesota. Should have the mock up Photoshop tomorrow. Plan is 40th gray with 40th red trim on the bottom. So from one agonizing wait (Fast Intentions twin turbo install) to another! |
To say that I am ecstatic with the dyno results after the Fast Intentions twin turbo install is putting it mildly. I -really- wanted to see 600hp. Yes, it was all psychological! So when Tony called with the 604hp number I was all smiles.
I pick the car up on the 29th! http://www.the370z.com/members/arrva...pecialty-z.jpg |
congrats dude!!!
|
Great news! Looking forward to seeing it back in MN :)
|
Great moves so far! And it looks like it's just starting.... subb'd for the varis arising kit :)
|
very nice build.
|
I saw your car all wrapped up today. Congrats.

I stalked Fast Intentions...then spotted my car. Picking it up on the morning. But Tony let me turn it on. Holy crap...it sounds like a beast now.

Had a great time with Lance from Next Level Performance and a ton of MNNI (Minnesota Nissan/Infiniti) people at the Dopery Convention in Minneapolis yesterday. I think everyone really enjoyed the "Find the turbos" game. Seriously, the Fast Intentions set up is so stealth. The only give away that my car is boosted is the intercooler, even with the hood up.
Now the update: Until now I have been spending most of my time thinking about performance modifications and taking advantage of a few visual 'deals' like the 40th gray headlights that I got from another forum member. But really my focus has been where the car's performance was going; what was I going to do with it when I was behind the wheel. I always new that I wanted to track it. Not an autocross or drag guy. And the twins cemented that this car was going to perform as good as it looked and it was not going to be a pampered tiger. The Varis Arising II kit was a big a decision as the turbos and cemented the overall look. But until this weekend I hadn't worked out a lot of the details that I think make a beautiful car a real work of love. - Varis modification and color: I agree with most people that the Varis front is very busy. I'm going to see if I can take out the center vertical bar. I think that will allow you to focus deeper in to the opening and to the intercooler. That focus should help balance out the vents...which for the record...are 100% functional IF you have the vented hood and fenders. My cooling concerns are a thing of the past. For paint I am going to paint the kit 40th gray (Duh! I don't think a 40th should -ever- have its color changed.) with a 40th red strip where the blue is today on the company's photos. I think the red line will work to define the bottom of the car at all angles and add another distraction from all the vents in front. Should have everything ready for a coming out party at ZdayZ. - Wheels: I've really been struggling over wheel selection. I don't want to swap out the 40th rims. I really like them. But they are not wide enough to track 604hp. I've decided to keep two sets of wheels: 40th for daily driving and TE37s in matte/flat black for shows and the track. Since the car is just as much a track car as a show car the show car is going to have to give in to 19" wheels instead of 20"s. Going 9.5" (275s) front and 10.5" (305s) rear with Hankook R-S3s. - Coilovers: Leaning towards BC RM Types...you know...Because Race Car (duh). :D - Brakes: Going BBK. Racing Radi-CAL by STILLEN with J-hook rotors. Expensive as hell but they are sexy (see show car I love you too) and the J-hook rotors are a great idea (besides being sexy as hell). - Full Cage: Yeah, I'm doing it. Why spend the money to just put in a roll bar when I know that I want to club race the car? Screw it...full cage but painted black and as stealth as I can get it. I'll be looking for a shop that thinks they are up to the challenge next winter. - Racing Seats: I have to check the rules but I think I can do two piece seats in club racing Time Trials. The key here is they will be custom made with leather to match the 40th red interior. Another pricey spring item. - Stillen Brake Ducts: Really? You're going to make me say it again...fine! Because Race Car. - Sways: Yes hollow don't weigh as much but solid are well, solid. Whiteline sways front and back. - Misc Finish details: Saw a lot of great finishing details yesterday at the Dopery Convention. Awesome dressup bolts, stainless steel reservoirs, and engine bay paint schemes. Yes, yes, and yes please. These will be great winter items to keep me from going insane. There we go. There are a few small things I left out because I think they will be cool surprises. But that's the bulk of it. Body kit and wheels will be done by ZdayZ guaranteed. Coilovers and sways should be. Brakes might be. I really want them to be but they are pretty expensive so I'm not sure I can swing it all that fast. If not they will be first for spring, then seats for summer, and cage over the winter of '15. '16 will be about enjoying my efforts...and starting a 240Z project for my then 18 year-old-daughter. |
Wow what a list! Going to be one hell of a car if it isn't already!
|
You don't want much, do you. :icon17:
|
Sometimes I really hate you guys...I really really do. I was all set to spend money on Whitelines and BCs in several months but NO you guys just have to offer some used up today! *grumbles* I do have kids and they need to eat a few times a week you know.
So yeah, BC ERs commited to along with front and rear Whitelines. Better start looking for Whiteline endlinks now. |

And now...it is time to play "One of these things is not like the other!" Meet our contestants!
Item one is all the way from Canada...a Big Type R Heavy Shift Knob in graphite (not that we see color!) Item two is from...don't know or care, probably China! Glue Dots! Item three will stick to you if you are the tin man (right?) but not if you're just a man! Strong round magnets! I once saw my mom use this stuff! Item three is best found at a quilting circle...Quilt Basting Spray! And finally, plucked from a life of loneliness in a 'remnant' bin at a fabric store...fabric! Black...but again...we don't see color or care who the fabric hangs out with! So...Which of these things is not like the other!? |
Man, I love this build. Tested from Cali to Minnesota.

And what the correct answer is depends on how you look at it. The magnets and glue dots -were- an attempt to allow an easy on/easy off front license plate thing. That was a complete failure as MN plates are no longer made of a metal that magnets like. So I think I'm going to go get a magnetic strip and glue it to the plate. I might just glue a magnet to the plate but they are kind of thick...but probably stronger. We'll see. The quilt basting spray and black fabric are an attempt to cover the visor warning labels in a non-permanent way (as I think covering or removing is illegal when selling). The shift knob is...a shift knob. |
Was really hoping the Varis arrival would be 2 months but it looks like they are backed up. The new kit is very popular around the world so I am 3-4 months out. Oh well.
I decided the best thing to do was do stuff on the car! So I finally got my blend mount installed. You really have to jam the leads in to the mirror connectors. I also pried the connector open a bit which seemed to help. If anyone finds the installation less than 'easy' as so many suggest let me know. I'll give you my bits of wisdom. I also installed a red LED in the hatch. Last year I replaced the map lights with the same red LEDs but left the hatch white thinking that if I was in the hatch I needed the light. Screw that...hate white. It is red now. My LED parking lights came today. I think I'll wash the car tomorrow and install those. Also thinking about changing the diff oil. Next few weeks are going to be busy: Friend's church car show is Sat, the following Sat is Madfurther (another car/lifestyle show), 27th is drag strip night, following Wednesday is drag strip night, the 5-7th is track weekend. Yeah, changing the diff oil. I'm sure it has never been done and I was reading an article from AMSOIL where they were talking about most wear in the diff comes in the first 3000 miles so if you don't change it you're doing a lot of damage since there is no filter. After that it can go to normal intervals. I'll hold off bleeding the brakes until the day before the track weekend at Brainerd. Don't need good brakes on the strip! I uh....also looked at my tires today. Yeah...uh...I think what had been left after getting home is now on 20' strips around town. >.> That sucks because I am getting new track (18") and show (20") wheels. But I had wanted to get through the strip nights and track weekend on what I had so I could buy wheels and tires in late September before Z Nationals. So now I need to either get tires for the OEMs and then get new wheels and tires on schedule basically wasting money on my OEMs or I have to bite the bullet and get new 18" tires and wheels now. That's all I can really do I think...really didn't want to spend that money. *sigh* Lance!!!! Answer your phone. I need ****! :D |
275/35-19s for the front and 305/30-19s for the rear. Decided to stick with OEM wheels and push off track tires and wheels until spring. Best part.....I get to really light up my dead tires the weekend! Perfect timing since there is a burnout competition at the car show!
Sqwwwwwwweeeeeeeet! |

I am seriously considering such a device.... I now have additional garage space and a rolling rack for multiple tire/wheel sets makes more sense.

Great read man. Reminds me of when I bought my first Z(350, 04) , like you I'm sure I will have one again. For now I need the 4 doors, :/
|
I hear that. And asking your family to financially support two cars/6 total doors is hard. The thing I learned is to just not let go of the dream. :)

Got half my tirerack.com order today. Strange because the rears were scanned at Origin within five minutes of each other. But the rears made it today and the fronts should be here tomorrow. From Chicago to Minnesota...not like NY to LA. No biggie, just odd.
275/35x19 fronts and 305/30x19 rear on stock 40th Rays. |

Winter came fast in Minnesota and like the Z I've been hibernating. But a text from my 'enabler' has me all school girly...my Varis Arising II complete kit showed up on the docks in California! Will be in Minnesota on Monday!
Has me thinking about wheels and spring! Only 6 months to go! God, I need to get out of this state! |

Very excited for you brother, looking forward to next week! |
...Three years later...
Time flies when life introduces stress. 2017 is the first year since getting the car that I've had it to drive an entire driving season! My own fault; having things done during driving season sucks when things don't get done on time. But no worries, driving the hell out of the car now. Biggest changes: Complete Varis Arising II installed and painted (40th Anniversary Graphite with black and red highlights) and 2017 Limited Edition Recaro Sportster seats. Man those seats are comfortable. Putting AP Racing BBKs, Enkei PF07s, KW Coilovers, and 4 point roll cage in this month. Then taking the car back to LA to see Sebastian at SpecialtyZ for some gauge installs, a catch can, and new 93 Octane tune. Calling her mostly done then! Been a multi-year and tens of thousands of dollars journey but worth every minute and most of the money (LOL). Anyway, glad to be back! |
