MKG's Custom Single Turbo Build
View post #3 for finished build.
Well I guess I will start with a little background. I purchased my 370 Z new in Feb. 2012. Over summer 2012 I had were Ark Exhaust, FI headers, custom painted rays wheels, custom painted headlights, custom cubby tablet, and other little crap you wont care to read about. Anyways, I got bored with the car and felt it needed something more. Well that really escalated to me and my buddy "boosted MX5"(forum name on here) to building a complete turbo setup for the Z. After seeing a lot of people pushing 500hp to the wheels I decided that was for me but I didn't really like the kits we had available in terms of pricing or performance. Now when I say I "Didn't really like the performance" I'm really just talking about nit picky things and nothing major. On to the more interesting stuff.. Please keep in mind this build is being done by two kids barely able to legally purchase alcohol so let try to keep the negative comments as constructive as possible Goals for the build: -To successfully run E85 long term. -To make full boost faster than any other kit and hold power. -To have the first wire tucked but still useful engine bay -To make this a really fun car that is just stupid fast all of the time PARTS!!! -Custom Borg Warner S259 Turbo with upgrade billet compressor wheel, built by BTS -Tial WG's & BOV's -ID1000 injectors -God Speed Project TT FMIC -Mod Shack Oil Cooler(temporary solution) -E85 -Aeromotive Stealth 340lph Fuel Pump -Lots of V-bands -Custom made in house Up-pipe, down-pipe, exhaust That is all of the main parts there are lots or little things going in like wiring and clamps and other crap that isn't worth mention yet. So far we have about 8-10 hours invested in the build so there isn't a lot of progress but I will post pics. Pretty much just disassembled everything needed to get to the building portion of the project. We are tucking and relocating quite a bit of stuff from the engine bay. Once that is done(should be this weekend) the fabrication portion will start.

Was doing a daily log but sort of updated through comments instead. Will add all progress pics to this post though.

FINISHED PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just want to say that John and the guys at M R Performance are fantastic! Really helpful. Ran into a few hang ups here and there with the car and they just let us work on the car and really spent the time to make sure we got what we came for. Honestly 10/10. Would recommend to anyone. Final pull on 8lbs. Had a boost leak. Still made 400whp351tq. Still lots to work on before we turn up the boost. However we will see roughly 420-450whp @8lbs once a few changes are made with the leak and exhaust. Aiming for 10-12lbs max boost but I need to be careful. Not in a rush to blow it up. Also the bits where I talk in the video. I am literally shouting as loud as possible because the car is that loud. I didn't think my phone would even catch it.lol It was louder than the shop owners open midpipe gtr.lol

I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I hope you didnt bite off more than you can chew. The math alone on designing a system is quite in depth.
Goodluck!

Thanks! We both have a decent amount of knowledge in this sort of thing plus "Boosted MX 5" is well...boosted on his own custom build.

The problem with this build is that your MX5 friend picked a turbo that is much more suited for his 4 cylinder car than it is for your 3.7L V6...he probably has plans to buy it from you as a used unit when you find out it is too small.....
So, the first thing you should do is upgrade the turbo, or buy another one just like it, and build a TT kit. I just did some testing (exhaust back pressure) with a Precision 6266 T4 1.15 a/r (much much larger turbine that what you have) and it is just right for the stock block. The EBP vs. boost was below the 2:1 ratio....just where you want to be on a turbo build. Even with this larger turbine, 10psi of boost was no problem by 3,500rpm. You will exceed this by about 4,500rpm with that turbo, and the entire system will choke as a result. Take this as some friendly advice which will save you a lot of work in the long run…having to rebuild the kit for a larger turbo down the road.

This is a modded S256 turbo. Its will work quite well with this car. And he didn't pick the turbo but good assumption Also Precision's 6266 was a thought but I don't want to be part of any company that refuses to post technical data.

Think I'll jump in here. I too was skeptical of the turbo. When I was sizing them for single it was evident that a MASSIVE turbo would be needed to not be choked off. Really the s366 borg is more appropriately sized. However, MKG really wants a response machine. So the smaller turbo is the way to go. Oh, also with the billet wheel upgrade it should be able to max around ~650whp. And yes it will be close to choking, but it shouldn't, the billet wheel again gives just enough room. Not saying that it won't be as efficient up top as a bigger snail but it should get the job done.

Remember, the T3 framed turbo kits for the 350z's could never get past 500whp a few years back due to the same issue I am describing. Only when I introduced a true T4 frame turbos were customer able to get there. Many of my customer have built engines and are in the 650whp (pump gas) range with a 6266. Many though that this was not possible with a single turbo, and that there is no way to compete with the TT kits...so much for that PTE 62mm turbo will flow 72lb/min of air, and the 67mm turbo will flow 93lbs/min. I know that there are not flow maps like with Garrett, but that is plenty of info. On top of that (as I mentioned) I did some testing and told you what turbine housing works best for this platform.
