Cold Spec is .012-14 if I remember right on the intakes they are all over but one is as much as .017. Exhaust cams are about .03 over spec in the worst case. Basically about 1/3 the valves are out of spec on both intake and exhaust side.
Mystery solved. I’m having it all redone starting today. IPP has said they will cover the repair. I hope they come through. This was a pretty egregious F-up from the machine shop they use. One valve had a few thousands under lash and that’s actually a bit scary. I’m with a pretty good tech. Hopefully he can get the lash sorted on his first go but there is a little trial and error that goes into this to get the buckets all sorted. Either way after bony J’s of pulling out my hair trying to get the Z back in one piece we are in the home stretch. Of course I still may have to reflash the VVELs and retune but... baby steps.

I can’t wait to run around in it once we’re all tuned up.

Lash on JWT cams is 11-13 mills I had most at 14 and 15.
Lash on intakes is 14. Some were close, one was at 17. We’re getting there. The coupe has gone to my buddy’s shop for some pretty welds on my diff cooler and oil cooler. Also for a bit of help wiring in my oil and pressure gauges (my solutions were a bit ugly) ![]()

What's wrong with the gauge wiring. Too short?

No it more like I don’t know where best to tap in for my oil temp and pressure and how to plumb my best option for getting reliable readings. These guys build a lot of race cars and are pretty smart on that stuff. As I’m in for some welds and AN lime fittings their going to plumb me up while I’m there.

Well believe it or not after relashing the heads there was still some engine noise (less noise but still..) coming out of my motor so I tore it down again and found another problem. Can you friggin’ believe it!!?!
Z1s Short block is eating itself. According to two motor builders who have looked at it, either the wrist pins are too tight or the pistons are a bit undersized (or a bit of both I suspect). Anyhow after about 200 miles of easy break in (with break in oil) check out these totally trashed cylinders... the groves are deep enough to feel with your eyes closed. Definitely not normal at all. This motor wouldn’t last an hour at full power I suspect. The pistons are rocking with the wrist pins not “floating” in the cylinders on the oil as they should. Also notice the high carbon buildup from excessive oil blow by. That should not be there after only 200 miles of break in style driving. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sooo... I’ve pulled the motor (again... 3rd time) and sent Z1 their block back. They are deciding what to do about it. (They did send a shipping label so that a start) In the mean time as the motor is again totally apart, I sent the heads to MA Motorsports. Daelen there looked em over. He says the lash and overall head condition looks good now. (After relashing them into spec here in Denver). I figured a second very experienced set of eyes could not hurt before I bolt this f-er back together... hopefully for the last time. Ug. This has sucked.
