You need it to press new bearings onto the diff (old ones will be toast if you try to get them off) Also unless you have a LOT of experience setting the shims to give you proper gear spacing you will probably goof it up. In other words if you have to ask if its a good DIY it is not a good DIY. lol I'm currently running a ton of spacer combos trying to hit the sweet spotImageUploadedByTapatalk1362602542.577127.jpg Some guys get lucky with stock spacers. I'm not so lucky... Murphy is my copilot today.
