Hopefully, I'm still trying to get some answers on the do's and don'ts of painting these things, but I'm pretty confident I'll get it done and have em back on for the meet.

No kidding! I've obviously been interested in the boosted performance kit, but even his second batch of kits are pretty much spoken for at this point, at least I'd say so with all the interest and him only producing 6-ish at a time, might be kind of hard to get a hold of one.
Plus Devin and I are looking into a new daily to replace the 3000GT, something with 4 doors to haul friends around and some cargo space for our photography equipment and dogs when we want to take them places, a hatch most likely. We're looking at a 2012 Impreza sport/premium, which would cost the equivalent of supercharging the Camaro and getting the Z Turbo'd. Most likely we'll get the new car over boosting the current cars, cause its so inconvenient cramming the dogs in the 3000's back seat and not having any 4 door cars with space to carry luggage/people. The Z will get Turbo'd one day, I'll want to wait to here reviews of the fast intentions twin kit also, even though I'm pretty set on the single at this point.

I don't think I have any photos off hand, but I'll get you some next time I see the Z, its parked in someone else's garage until I get the lights painted. The antenna was wrapped as well, it's just cut right down one of the edges and and I believe it overlaps itself a little bit, but looks perfect and unnoticeable.

Completely disassemble all the pieces off of the headlight into a freezer ziplock bag including all screws. Get a cookie sheet and place a dampened towel on it to lay the headlight on. 250 degrees for 10 min is perfect. Use mechanix gloves when taking out and pulling apart to separate, it will be hot. Start from the corner of the light that is closest to the rear of the car and pull it back. Separate slowly, use a butter knife to separate a small tab on the side and continue pulling apart. There will be a snap once you get toward the bottom but don't b scared, happens every time. Just be careful and the very bottom, those plastic tabs will snap if you bend the glass off at too much of an angle. I recommend going very slow and pulling it off in an upward motion. Once apart I would wait for it to cool a bit then pack some of the glue back into the plastic edge of the headlight to make the glass slide back in easy when its time to reassemble. Unscrew the 3 screws that hold the chrome shroud. Note they are longer than the other screws. Taking off the shrouds has to be in order. First take off the clear parking light cover, then the orange reflector, then the hid shroud. Reverse when installing. Clean the chrome housing with paint prep and then sand with 300-400 grit sand paper before painting. Hopefully in a dust free environment which no DIY person has. Bugs love the smell of paint and a small dust lint will screw up your paint, especially if it has any gloss or is black. Let dry, don't rush yourself. Next clean the glass carefully and thoroughly, it scratches easy and dust shows when you turn on your headlight. Reassemble in reverse order. Use silicone sealant in the plastic base if you feel it needs more or want to be safe. Bake again and press together firmly. Do not use a drill when reassembling. The Plastic will be hot and will strip easy. I would just place the screws in and tighten to 100% after you are sure it has cooled a bit. Hope that helps. |

Also we sold our 3000GT to my younger brother and went out and bought a 2012 Subaru Impreza, Sport Premium model.
Drive back from Houston, got a good deal on it down south, drove down on Monday, banks were closed for Martin Luther, so stayed the night at a hotel and bought it Tuesday morning, drove back up to Dallas and was at work by 4:30pm. Long day ImageUploadedByTapatalk1358981944.335605.jpg View of Dallas as I'm driving. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1358982046.801001.jpg By the Camaro in the garage, Z is in another garage until the lights are painted. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1358982086.234536.jpg 9,600 total miles on it after the drive back home (bought it with like 9,300). We were getting around 33mpg's on the way back, the dealer filled it for us in Houston, and 300 miles later its still got half a tank!!

Got my paint supplies From Automotive Touchup in today, as well as Krylon Fusion Gloss black from Walmart for the housing.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1359570789.249669.jpg Left to Right: Prep Solvent, adhesion promoter, sand able primer, base coat color (Monterey Blue), gloss clear coat, Krylon fusion (fusion=good on plastics) gloss black. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1359570927.882712.jpg I also got a tack cloth which you can use to wipe dust from the painted surface if need be in between painting, and a "fine" scuff pad to get the surface of the plastic ready for paint, all from Automotive Touchup. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1359571066.750580.jpg Also picked up some Meguiars Ultimate Compound to use on my lip kit, as well as a little plastic epoxy from Loctite for my carbon fiber piece above my license plate, which likes to come unglued from the bumper on the edges because the 3M isn't strong enough, bugs the hell out of me. Just finished my lights and re-installed my front bumper at 3am in the morning after work (last night), drove down to Houston for a meet with a bunch of local Z's today at the woodlands C&C and had a ton of fun. We went on a long cruise afterwards then ate lunch, then headed back up here to Dallas.
