Travis' car eats money

But at least it's running now so it can get ready to head back to the track.

me too!

The car is in great shape for the most part. Junior went above and beyond in many areas. In a week or so I will try to do a full photo shoot so you all can see the details in high res.

I will be running in a Porsche DE event tomorrow to see how everything is sorted. First time at this much lower weight (no still don't have an exact number, sorry!). First time with new pads. First time with full cage. First time with splitter and wing. Etc. So the goal is very modest for tomorrow ==> see what works and what doesn't. I'm not out to set any lap records!

I also won't have the video/data hooked up for tomorrow, unfortunately, but that should be in for the next event which is 1 week from now.

Finally, there is an electronics issue remaining with the car that we still need to figure out. Car registers "N" only for gear select, so the SRM is inop. I'm going to have to use my god-awful heel-toe skills! The three gauges on the top fail to light up. And it seems to me that the power steering is running at 1/3 power at best. But regardless, the car works, so I'm very happy to just have it running!

More tomorrow.

I can only speculate... and it doesn't matter really, key thing is to dig out and get the car sorted

Its a new car with new style stuff so we had to toy with things to get them to work. ECU damage was not my work or in my control.

Turned a 1:04.75 today at Firebird West. I may have done better than that - not sure - I only had someone timing me for a couple laps during 1 one of 5 sessions, so pretty sure he didn't get my best. In any event, course records are below. I am a few seconds off the pace for the course record for my "TTS" class. My car is still 300 pounds over weight (or underpowered) relative to my class limit, so I'm running a lot more like a "TTA" car right now. I also think I can pick up a few tenths with SRM - for some reasons my brass balls factor goes up when I use it. I'm overall happy with the result. Today was just a Porsche Club DE, will do this "for real" next weekend when the people you see listed below will all be lined up to compete!

Will post more thoughts later tonight on remaining mechanical issues to be sorted. Sorry, no vid today.

Big stuff
  • Fuel starvation... still need to fix this... haven't made any progress and it is going to be needed to drop a couple tenths off my times
  • Brake issue... I had the "ICE EFFECT" big time today and it was embarrassing... the chief driving instructor thought I was just being an idiot when I slowly grinded to a halt half way through a carousel... I have a new theory about what is going on that I will explain on the thread Chrisslicks started Braking problem - malfunctioning ABS... I'm going to proceed with more brake cooling, but that's *NOT* the root cause, I'm fairly certain
  • ECU issue... I want my SRM back! could be as simple as reprogramming the computer... it is new and the dealer didn't have time to program it... could also be we have another short, blown circuit or disconnect somewhere... the three center gauges are not working... I haven't even checked the fuses yet, so that's the first order of business
  • Rear diff cooler setup

Smaller stuff / lower priority
  • Connect transponder, reconnect traqmate/chasecam
  • Splitter ver 2... need to revisit the fasteners - they are being sheared off whenever I scrap the track - will post more on this below
  • Fluids... gear oil, motor oil
  • Setup... I'm thinking about -3.0/-2.5deg camber, neutral toe front, -1/8 toe rear, and 5.0deg caster front...
  • Stiffer springs... I'm using 10/12k springs now and I'd like it to be stiffer yet... won't happen in 2010, but eventually something like these Moton 3 Way Adjustable Nissan Motorsport Dampers with 800+lb/in springs

Junior, as for the front splitter... it was held up well overall and of course got lots of positive comments from folks at the track... but there are a few issues we need to address

- screw heads stick out on the bottom of the alum plate, and so they are getting shaved off on the asphalt
- as a result, there is a danger the splitter will work loose...
- and it becomes impossible to remove the screws with hand tools because they are half way shaved
- 3 screws completely wasted today... and 1 of the 2 front turnbuckles was disconnected for same reason
- I had to put the car on my lift between sessions and grind off what was left of the screw heads so I could drop the splitter
- It was very easy to remove the splitter once I did that, so props to you for the quick release setup! that part was perfect!

Here's what I would propose:

- the 1/8 alum needs to be an absolutely flat surface with no fasteners sticking out beneath it
- I think we need to mount the alum to the boatboard with bonding material only - no fasteners
- then we cut holes in the alum so we can recess the fasteners that will attach splitter to frame... result = 100% flat surface

I ordered fasteners below that we can try:
  • #9679 - Machine screws, Phillips pan head, Stainless steel 18-8, 5/16-18 x 3/4
  • #14350 - Sex bolts - Phillips truss head serrated, Stainless steel 18-8, 3/8 barrel (5/16-18 thread) x 3/4
  • #14873 - Standard elevator bolts, Stainless steel 18-8, 5/16-18 x 1
  • #2564 - Hex nuts, Stainless steel 18-8, 5/16-18

Both the transmission and the gauges use the CAN bus for communication. You might have to go back on a Consult-III to troubleshoot that one.

I haven't had a chance to push my AP brakes to the limit yet, weather still sucks.
